What is the lowest temp that most corals can thrive in? and lowest they can survive?
Temps into the 90's causes bleaching in the natural envoirment of corals.
Cetain places where the waters were 95 degrees, from the El Nino, the coral had died off. The cold water harbors more life, food, etc. for everyone which in turn makes healthy reefs. What is the lowest temp that most corals can thrive in? and that what cold temp do corals die off at?

The answer to this is interesting to me as well. I dont have a real answer but anecdotal evidence ive gathered when shipping corals is that its better to have them get too cold than too hot. If the temps get too hot in the box you end up with a bag of smelly slime, too cold and they do just fine.

It really depends on the species. There are some cold water coral that not only survive in 50°f water, but thrive in it. Others would die off in water sustained in the upper 60s.

below 74 Id say they get stressed.
this is just a guess from experience of lowering temp for colder water fish. Note, this is about SPS corals. My NPS tank is around 72, does better in colder. |
