this has not been effective in reducing my cyano issue. I am dosing lanthanum chloride as well so PO4 is VERY low. any thoughts?

Cyano isn't algae. Try chemiclean or reducing your carbon dosing.

If AlgaeFix kills algae, that leaves more nutrients for cyanobacteria. That might be one issue.
Lanthanum seems to be able to pull the phosphate level down far enough for our purposes, if enough is added.

Hello everyone,
I have been reading this entire thread for about a week and the other day I ordered Algaefix. I had some HA issues about two months after I started my 30gal lps tank. We went to key west for a week in n September and I came home to a massive algae outbreak. I began strict weekly 5gal water tree we changes, added a tang and upped my cc and got it a little better under control. Two weeks ago I lost my entire livestock to ich. I decided to use this as an opportunity. I have still been dealing with the HA issue even after scrubbing about 75% off lr it grew back within a week. I brought my p04 down to about 0ppm, put in 10 blue legged crabs two more large turbos, and started a refugium. I'll be dosing Algaefix in moderate amounts as an aid to get rid of the nuisance algae. I also have some bubble algae starting I'll be relying on the crabs to help me with. I plan on running my skimmer the entire time. And I plan on tagging another 10 crabs in the next couple weeks to help. Before pics to come. To the more veteran guys, how does this plan sound to you? Ammonia 0 Nitrates 0 P04 .05 Cal 400 30 gal micro 30 IM skimmate Cheato refugium 21 lb LR Duncan, zoa, frogspawn, star polyp 1.5" sandbed Temp 77-78 deg Light cycle blue 7-8 white 8-6 blue 6-7 moonlight |

Sorry if I missed it (this is a really long thread) but could anyone explain the best way to determine how much of this stuff to use? I know there's a calculator to find the volume of my tank and sump, but then I should just roughly estimate the number of gallons to deduct for the space my rocks take up?

Getting the volume of a tank requires some guesswork as to the volume of rock and sand.
AlgaeFix might affect some macroalgae. I don't remember any specifics, though.

Well after reading almost all of this thread, I am taking the plunge and going for AF Marine. Was an extra two bucks, and I plan to keep some around for future use.
I have the dictyota's. :/ My paremeters are basically 0, so I am going to dose this bad boy with AF. I plan on using my skimmer on as well. Will let yall know how it does. ya'll better be profanity removed. just kidding. Last edited by bertoni; 01/17/2014 at 12:34 AM. |

I started AlgaeFix without cleaning my tank. First dose in and algae became dark green. Today I will have 2nd dose.

4th dose update: still nothing. Algae continue to grow, but PO3 has gone from 0.05 to 1ppm.

Try and tackle your phosphates while you're doin the treatment. The PO4 is coming up because it is no longer being bound organically.

yes i agree. i have added 2 cups of brs hi cap gfo and 2 cups of carbon in my 300g system. ive noticed some hair algae floating around after 1 dose and filter socks were loaded with it. i always keep my phos in the water column under .02
i think it is always a good idea to clean as much h/a out as u can before you start algaefix. |

I agree that removing the phosphate is a good idea. GFO can do the job. Given the concentration, some water changes might be cheaper, but I haven't run the numbers.

Have heard nothing bad about this product apart from it dosn't always work 100%, and is's not so good with cyano. The funny thing is that A.P.I who make this product, cause algae problems. There phosphate test kit dosn't test low enough, to tell you if your tank has low phosphates!!.
