Open back canopy

Alright, gotta question. What is the benefit of having a open back canopy? I get that it might help with cooling if you are running MH but I am installing T5, probably an aquactinics solarflare, that has fans built in. I think the escaping light from the back might get annoying. I am assuming I will have to intall a fan(s) and/or a vent(s) on either end of the canopy anyway with or without the open back, so why leave the back open too? Anyhoo, I just wanted to get some input or opinions on this topic so I can make a decision to enclose the canopy I have on order.
Thanks in advance

I think you answered your own questions. Having an open back will help with air exchange as well as helping to let heat escape. If the escaping light is a bigger problem, then close the back. Its a matter of personal preference, and how your tank is set up (mine is against a wall where escaping light won't be a big problem, so I've opted for the open back).

Open back also allows for better air circulation and to help let moister out so it does not collect on the wood. I have the Aquactincs fixtures with an open back and my tank is 6 inches from the wall and at night I love the way the white light silhouettes the wall.
