Day 15

Day 15

Eating a bit more comfortably but not going to town. This is a mix of frozen brine and mysis. Most mysis chunks are too big for him to swallow. He’s also getting much less shy swimming in the open even with people standing around the tank which is a peninsula with not a lot of rock and hiding...

Knock on wood but so far happy with the decision to Not QT him. Being around other fish eating out of the column helps perhaps.

Here's mine. Had the Juvie for over a year now and the 2 adults about a year. They're all from LA. Surprising, the adult #1 with the short gill spine is the most dominant. Adult #2 will yield for adult #1 on food. The juvie does not get bothered by any of the adults and the false eye is fading away. I don't think the sex has been determined of any of these. Even though I have a pair of mating Interruptus in the tank, the Regals are still my favorite.

Now day 23. Much less timid. Eats everything out of the column. Seems to be comfortable in the social structure. Below is a video from today he’s eating Elos pellets. Aggressively going after food. Took a while but I’m happy about not QTing and releasing him from a partition after 1 week. I think it helped him learn to eat. I’ve had bad luck with previous yellow belly regals but they were older (4-5 inches) and never came out from hiding or ate aggressively. Still too
Soon to tell but he’s on the right trajectory.

Was there a general consensus with regards to the ideal place to purchase from with the greater chance of success? I was considering ordering a tang today from Live Aquaria and noticed they had a couple but the price seemed higher and they had three to choose from. Indian Ocean Orange, Indo and South Pacific, and Read Sea. I didn't see any of the Juvi medium maldives listed. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place...

Edit: Hmm...the purchase / add to car box shows Maldives now for me. Maybe a browser error before. $230 seem about right? For some reason I was thinking 180'ish.

$230 is their normal price on LA. They have sales pretty often that range from $140-$180. Try using the coupon code listed above. Not sure if that one is good for livestock though.

$60 for a yellow belly regal is an awesome price, and about half of what quality marine charges wholesale

Based on past experience, the regal you start with has a lot to do with your probability of success. The recent one I acquired from LA (not DD) is a juvi medium and came in around 2 inches. I've tried the fish a couple of times before with older yellow bellies (4-5 inches) without success. Couldnt get them eating or comfortable enough to leave a hiding spot.

I've been posting for the last few weeks on the LA baby regal I've recently added if you want to follow my experience with this one.

Based on experience the price is irrelevant. I've paid a lot more for ones that failed in the past. A solid healthy captive adaptable one is the key. Also don't trust any vendor that says they are eating (live or prepared foods) prior to being shipped to you.

They sorta looks the same as Juvi but the blue of the Pacific Regal continue to develops and ended up with bluer darker fish than the IO or Red Sea Regal.
I like them too. After keeping them both and seeing them side by side, they are both exceptionally beautiful fish. Just not the same.

The juvi that i got from them a few months ago has done great. Starting eating pellets right away in QT and adjusted extremely well to my display.

Thanks. You know that age old saying if you have to ask you probably can't afford it... I've personally not seen that fish before, very pretty. Some times you are just better off not knowing

Thanks for the ID though. Learned something new today which is always a good thing.

Not to derail the thread, but I have my pair of interrupta almost a year now. Here they are doing their mating dance which happens every evening when the actinic comes on.
