Coraline growth
I just re scaped my tank. I want to get the coraline to spread. I have a seed rock. Plenty of blue light.
I was told at LFS to does magnesium. Went back to get it and was told Strontium. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Patience
Stability (calcium/mag/strontium/trace elements all seem to be applicable) Luck Lack of Predators Really no "magic recipe" or "easy button" beyond that.. On some tanks it grows like crazy.. Some never get any.. Hasn't been any proven/repeatable/concrete evidence or methods to get it to grow like mad.. What works for one isn't guaranteed to work for another..

The tank might need some time, or it might need seeding with strains of coralline that are compatible with the lighting. Neither strontium nor magnesium supplementation should be required. How long has the tank been running?

What i did was to scrape some coralline algae and mash them into powder/paste. Then spread them in your tank. But you need stability for them to grow.
Remember that growing them too much can be a problem too. I always had to clean my wave maker more frequently and they absorb kh and ca too.. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

Yeah, when i moved into a new tank my KH dropped CRAZY amounts in a day. Slow might be the better option.

I have added more fish I dosed 5ml yesterday and will do so on Wed and thurs. My lights are LEDs, rope lights...so there may be an issue there. But the more i read i am told the rock cant filter with too much coraline so I dont want much then!

LED Rope lights are more than likely under powered for anything except a fish only system.

Coralline coverage doesn't affect live rock filtration, as far as I can tell. I don't know how much light your rope lights produce, but the systems I've seen are fairly dim, and I wouldn't expect them to support much coralline growth.

Rope light is too dim to support coraline algae. But, tank depth play a part too..

OP, get a tuxedo urchin. It will eat coralline and spit it back out and help it to spread.

Maybe. There might be brighter rope lights than the ones I've seen, and if your tank gets direct sunlight, that could help coralline grow.

Nope, coralline algae actually likes dimmer light. The other thing it likes is high flow. I have it growing everywhere except on the sunny sides of the rocks in my large mixed reef tank where the light are burning it. On the glass and in the dimmer areas it grows like crazy.
Even in my fish quarantine tanks I got it growing and those just got standard daylight bulbs from Home Depot. It also has encrusted the skimmer of my anemone system, and that skimmer only gets a little stray light. So a lot of light is certainly not a requirement... Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk

There seem to be many strains of coralline, with different lighting requirements. I have had experiences with this issue. The LED ropes that I have seen have been very dim, and I wouldn't expect much algal growth with them, even with a strain that prefers lower light.

My best advice on coraline:
dont bother b4 ay least 6 monts of maturity. focus on making the tanks params stable. get focused on cal and alk balance. insure you have the proper buffer in your systen ie: sand and rock. good luck. |
