rolling blackouts - do I need to worry
I'm in the process of getting my tank setup and the news was talking about rolling blackouts. Is that something that normally hits irvine/souther OC and if so, what do you reefers do if anything - or is it short enough it's not much of a worry?

I'm in Irvine and I've experienced it once in 3 years a few weeks ago. They gave like a week notice but it was out for quite awhile, but I took the day off and stirred up the water for some oxygen exchange every once in awhile and luckily nothing died or anything

Actually I don't know if that was a rolling blackout or not but they shut off the power for like 6 hours. Other than that 1 time I havent experienced anything, at least nothing ssignificant to cause harm.

Well at least your being informed about said blackouts.. unlike the folks in sgv last year that lost tons of livestock due to high winds. Sooo should you be worried?? not any more than you should be worried about any other natural cause of electrical grid failure..

I'm thinking then I should probably buy a battery backup for my vortech...
How long does the power normally stay off?

I would, but I live in an apartment and it would just take up too much space...

man that's a ripoff...3 hours for almost $200...when the great northeast blackout happened a few years back my tank survived with no intervention for 9 hours (it was a 65)

One of my friends installs lines for SDGE and he says that they aren't close to getting san enofre back to full power here. They are talking about minimal operation in a month so if we have a heat wave that would be a big problem.
a few hours should be no big deal but I would try and keep a 2 liter or something like that with frozen water to try and regulate temp. generator would be nice but not for everyone.

I believe the rolling blackouts you heard about were in relation to the San Onofre power plant being off-line. If I recall correctly, the power plant has been given the go-ahead to resume partial operation. Also, the Navy base agreed to decrease electricity use during peak events (i.e. heat waves)...Either way, I'd be surprised if there weren't rolling blackouts once the temps get over 100.
