Bump.
We should start species specific photo threads. Of course, that assumes people posting to the threads actually know what species of anemones they have /em boggle

Here is my green S. haddoni, but I sold him to a fellow reefer. He is a beauty, and healthy too.

OK I have to ask.
How do you tell the differance between a S. haddoni and s.gigantea? Love the reds and blues, OK the greens also. |

Did you try a search in this forum or read the FAQ yet? If not you might want to try that, since that's a fairly common question, and the answers you'll find might be better than what I'm about to say. But here's my attempt at a short answer: haddoni tentacles tend to be short little nubs, gigantea tentacles tend to be longer (think of the difference of "carpet" and "shag carpet"). When a gigantea is stressed it might pull in its tentacles and it can be then hard to distinguish from a haddoni. Another difference is the presence of verrucae. Haddoni's have verrucae but they tend to be small, subtle or even invisible at a glance. Whereas gigantea's have obvious verrucae, sometimes even a constrasting colour. (Verrucae are the little "bumps" on the side of the pedal disk, which are used to help hold the anemone in place.) There are other differences too but that should give you a start. When you see enough pictures of both, it will eventually become fairly apparent. Hope this helps.

delphinus, Gary
Thanks for the info and pic. I had tried the Anemone FAQ yesterday but for some reason the link would not work for me. I checked it out today and it worked. I am setting up a new system, 72 bow, and I am planning the livestock etc. Doing research on everything I am not already familiar with. Thanks again! |

Here are the close-up pictures of my S. gigantea, one under 20,000K light and the other under the same light with flash.

Thanks Minh
With your pic next to Gary's I can easily see the difference. You can see the longer tentacles and the more pronounced verrucae in the Gigantea. Wow now I am an expert. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . At what I am not sure |

Has anyone ever seen an orange Carpet Anemone? {Not a dyed one, of course!} SDII seems to indicate they really exist....

Understandable. With a place like RC, who needs a library?
SDII = "The Reef Aquarium" {also called TRA} by Sprung/Delbeek vol. #2 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

LOL if you had said "D&S" or "S&D" or "TRA II" I would have clued in sooner. I was thinking this was some new supplier you guys had all found or something ... anyhow thanks for the clarification.
PS. It's been a while since I've hit my TRA and done some reading ... Doesn't Sprung talk about visiting an anemone farm somewhere? Man, I gotta find me the contact info for that place.
