Which refractometer? Amazon
Looking to replace my hydrometer and been researching seawater/salinity refracs .
They all look the same with ATC and hardcases. I did notice a few have a different viewer, is this correct and which is easier to read?   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have the 2nd one and it works great. Make sure to buy some calibrating solution.

Get 1 that is scaled for the range of our tanks. That one shows 20C or 68F. The Red Sea is for 77F.

BRS has one for $39.99, the ones on Amazon are half the price. Is there a difference?
I’ve had the same one for almost 15 years. No name brand on it but it still works and calibrates fine, but maybe it’s time for a new one.

We don't have all that much data on refractometers. Many of them are made to order and relabeled, so even knowing which company actually manufactured it is tough. You could try either model.
There are problems with calibrating with RO/DI: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-12/rhf/index.php#11 I used the PinPoint conductivity solution when I was using a refractometer. Something around 35 PSU, 1.026 SG @ 25C, or 53 mS should be fine if the solution intended for a refractometer.

I swear the cheap refracts with ATC work too good, never need to re-calibrate my old, rusty, even fractured 30 dollar refrac, while you can spend 3x as much for constant headaches.

But depending on the linearity of the Refractometer, by the time you get up to 1.026 you might be off. You might not be. I calibrate using RODI just because I don't have the cal fluid yet. If I calibrate with RODI, I know that at the very least my tank is /consistent/. I might not be 1.026, maybe I'm only 1.025. But I at least can confirm I'm still 1.025, and my water change water matches my tank. |

I like to have my local fish stores and fellow reefers test the water of the fish or frags I buy, then take a note of the deviation. After a few different stores and fellow reefers my refractometer is nicely calibrated, who doesn't constantly buy frags? They will likely even test the water for you right there to be sure.
I definitely advise against calibrating with ro/di. No way to guess slope and/or offset error amounts.
