Hi Daniel,
just finished reading the thread, good job getting a refugium running and letting things settle back down. The tank looks super healthy to me, looking forward to seeing it progress! I had the same issues and finally went with the bio-pellet route because I don't have room for a refugium. I also lost my birds first, while many acros browned but hung on. My huge green bird wad decimated, which I found surprising because I thought birdsnests were 'easier'. Keep us updated, following along!

I feed the fish only. Once a month, if I remember, I add aminoacids. But do not count that as feeding.
I have 15 fish for 70 G of real volume water. I feed them once at night, very well. The food detritus plus the fish poop are feeding the corals. I have an orange plate-shaped coral on the sand that has small tentacles (sorry can't remember the name). I feed a couple of small pellets once ~ month. I decided today to share with all the section of our hobby we do not show too much, but is the one that keeps the corals alive.
My tank is in a garage that we modified as a second family room, for my parents. The garage has originally a Tool Room, that is beside the tank. So I was able to do a hole in the back wall of the tank and connect the tank with the refugium. Here is that ex-tool room, now more a fish room. My RODI set up and the refrigerator for the beers .... LOL The refugium (20G) with 2 Bulkheads drilled that drain in the white tube that goes through the wall to the tank. Water is pumped from the tank and returns by gravity. The refugium: At the left you can see 2 transparent tubes. Those are for my WC. One pumps water out from the tank that drains (through another wall) in the washing machine drain tube. The other tube pumps water directly from the Brute. I do not have to carry buckets. I empty the Refugium up to the level of the pump, leaving only 2 inches of water and then I fill it again. All takes 15' . You can see the Water Change tubes better on this picture. Plus you can see the Mangroves growing inside of a cheap HOB filter (that is without the filtration system inside). It has a light with LEDs designed to growth plants ($15 from China, eBay). The HOB acrylic refugium full of MATRIX The refugium return to the Read Sea Max 250 tank The return drains in the media rack of the tank where I have 3 more bags with Matrix. OK..... now some coral pictures Last edited by nemodan; 09/26/2015 at 08:08 PM. |

I love your mad scientist lab in the garage.
In my old house, back before we had kids, I had my tank in the living room and an entire room in the basement where all the tanks and sumps and buckets and mangroves and filtration was.... That was the BEST! Yes, your system is certainly keeping your excellent looking reef happy. Very cool exposé on your system!

THANK YOU MATT , SAHIN AND M007 !!!!! Your nice comments gave me fuel to continue pushing this hobby.
I posted the same pictures in my old Reef Sanctuary thread and a guy that posted a comment has in his signature a paragraph...... To witch I feel identified because is happening to me when I show my fish room Behind the tank, plus the dosing pumps and chiller that are underneath the display tank, controllers, etc. Here is the the guy's paragraph: They come into the room and see my Red Sea Reefer tank and shower you with, "Ooohhh!" and, "Ahhhh!" and, "That's amazing!" You then tell them to look in the cabinet under the aquarium. Once the blank look of absolute shock clears from their face, they simply ask, "Are you #!&?ing nuts?" Daniel |

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE NICE COMMENTS !!
During the last 2 weekends I did a DIY media reactor to increase the amount of Seacherm Matrix in my tank. Beside all the Matrix I have in the HOB fuge (see fish room in previous posting) I decided to add more. In this case the excess do not affect the system, because it is 100% a biologic process. More nutrients >> more bacterias and less nutrient, implies less bacterias. The most important is that the bacterias find the real state needed to colonize. Matrix provides that real state. Here are some pictures of my DIY. if anyone interested I can provide more details of the parts. An air tight pasta container with bulkheads made using PVC tubing for electric work. Made using a female and a male connectors with an O ring in in the inside. For the hole I used a special drill (I can't remember right now the name). The acrylic was not cracked during the process. The bulkheads were screwed by hand and I glued to the outside 2 curved PVC tubes used in electric work too. The media reactor takes water from and return it to the refugium. All is 0.5" diameter. Leaking test Finish, installed and working. Matrix is in media bags to be cleaned easy in the future. The Home Goods sticker can be seen ($14.99) The Amaretti's box went to a good use Cheers Daniel Last edited by nemodan; 10/03/2015 at 08:11 PM. |
