Yes it will use more floss but you will get increased flow going through the unit and also less likely to get clogged up.

Actually, I rinse once and let dry. Dried bleach is harmless.

I know, I'm just paranoid.

I find the nylon filter socks very easy to clean. I am fortunate enough to have a utility sink with a spray nozzle nearby though. I only change them once every week or two. They only tend to clog when I feed stuff like reef roids. I'm not even sure I should keep running them lol.

The trigger for changing socks for me is when water flows over the top of the sock. That means the 225 micron mesh is clogged and ineffective.

Knowing when to, and actually changing them is quite easy. It's cleaning them that is the big chore IMO

I like it. I have a small RSR with only 1 sock. Too bad shipping is $10. probably still worth it but it bothers me to pay $10 to ship an $18 product....maybe I can find an alternative locally.

I just take the one mesh sock I have to the sink once a week and it sprays clean in less than a minute. I do like the cup and floss solution, may have to look that guy up.

So the Machine Shop ones fit the Red Sea? I think mine is smaller than 4", at least standard socks don't fit.

Like brushing your teeth or washing up dishes. Some things you just have to do or life gets messy!

Big chore? 10 minutes to replace socks, turn clogged ones inside out, rinse under hot water and put in bucket of bleach & water ready for weekly machine wash.

It becomes a big chore if they are left too long which is also when they aren't doing any good for water quality anyway!

Yeah, it's a chore. I don't have that much free time. I changed the floss in the cup yesterday in less than a minute.

Changing the filter socks is easy. Cleaning them is not. I don't feel like rinsing them, putting them in a bleach bucket, and then finally machine washing them. Wayyyyy too much effort as compared to pull old floss out, then insert new floss. I didn't even have to open the tray.

I'd rather spend that time testing the water an extra time or two than I normally would, than cleaning socks....

Machine time and material would make that more expensive than they are worth but I'll be making some 4" for my big tank. Between that, the compartment covers, reefLink, vortech and jebao mounts the printer has been pretty damn useful.

Nor to mention the wife isn't overly thrilled with the idea of fish tank filter socks in our washing machine lol.

Ordered one from The Machine Shop. I'm looking forward to layering floss and a bit of carbon and just tossing it weekly.

So I'm experimenting with how much floss and how to lay it.

I think I'm getting the best results with a simple one layer or two if you prefer on the bottom only. Too much and the water doesn't pass easily. One layer, will only require a 4x4 in square set flat in the bottom. Sony can buy a big roll of floss, cut into squares and then yank and change as necessary without ever even removing the cups from the tray.

I will say the floss gets pretty gross after a week.

Sounds like you are using some kind of pad or bonded floss and cutting it to size. I was planning on using loose polyester filter floss and packing it lightly. The stuff is cheap for a huge bag. Will report back when the cup arrives.

I don't understand people referring to cleaning mesh socks a chore. It's so easy, even when they are fully clogged.

Yep, bonded floss. It's not expensive but not as cheap as the loose stuff for sure. The bag I bought was probably around $12 and should last for 6 months.

You should shoot a video of you cleaning a filthy red sea mesh sock to show us how easy it is.

Then again my version of clean may be different from yours

I'm with you on this. Felt socks are a nightmare but the mesh is effective and easy.
