Reverse photoperiod for sump not refugium
Is there any benefit to lighting a sump with just live rock in it? I understand lighting a refugium on a reverse light cycle keeps the pH more consistant. I have a 20 gal sump with some extra live rock in it under my DT but I don't have a light on it.

IMHO light isn't going to do you any good in your sump unless you're trying to grow coraline or anything like that. The bacteria in the LR should colinate just fine in the dark, and the light on the LR in and of itself isn't going to do anything to your pH as far as I know...

I would need macroalgae in the sump for it to stabilize the pH. Right? Because the plants give off oxygen or CO2 depending on if the light is on or off. And that is what helps the pH. Right?

You could just leave it as is -- no lights, just the live rock. It was years ago, but someone did that, it is called a "cryptic sump" and will get a lot of different life growing in there.

Your theory on the macro is correct, but its benefit to pH is quite negligible.

Right now, besides the live rock, there is my skimmer, GFO reactor, and my Mag 18 return pump in the sump. My tank is doing fine how it is. I don't know if I should change anything.

Chaeto DOES benefit pH (albeit very slight) but it has additional benefits in lowering nitrates & phosphates.
