Blue Tuxedo Urchin Question
Are they known to eat Shrimp and crabs? my buddy has one and its eating every invert in his tank.

I have never heard of such a thing. I have one and it only eats algae, it doesn't even scavenge. I'm not sure how an urchin could even catch a shrimp. It sounds like something else is killing the inverts.

Depends on what you mean by blue tuxedo urchin. If you are referring to Mespilia globulus then no this is not possible. Mespilia globulus is not a carnivore. I suspect your buddy does not have a Mespilia globulus or the dead of the inverts is caused by something else.

He watched the thing with the shrimp in its mouth still alive. its suppose to be just an algae eater but i guess its got a taste for meat. its trying to eat a snail right now in front of me. its the wildest thing ive ever seen.

That's strange but I suppose anything can happen in this hobby. Do you have a picture or a short video clip? I am having a hard imagine a Mespilia globulus will have the mobility to catch a healthy live shrimp.

I've had a Tuxedo Urchin for years. It eats algae off the glass and occasionally the rock. You can't even see its mouth (unless it's on the glass) because the mouth is on the bottom. It poops out the top. They are strictly vegetarians, so your friend is mistaken.

My blue tuxedo urchin is eating one of my cleaner crabs as we speak....brought him out of the shell and everything. I took pics, because apparently, no one believes it could happen.

i'd like to see the pics, too. i have a tuxedo in my 14g and a pincushion in my 29g. i can't imagine either of them moving fast enough to catch anything other than algae!
