When is the best time to add a ATS to your tank?

Did you just started tank? No issue.. anytime. But keep in mind it takes some time for algae to establish on the screen

An ATS is a tool for expoerting NO3 and PO4 from the tank. If you can maintain those levels where you want from normal water changes you don't need one.
It also depends oon how you want to control. GFO, Skimmer, carbon dosing are other options. I use Carbon dosing, GFO, skimmer and ATS, but I have a very high bio load and feed heavy.
