How long has the tank been set up? Like what the other poster said it looks like cyano but it could possibly be diatoms. Hard to tell exactly from the pictures but it looks like it extends into the sand bed.

Ya it does go deeper into the sand bed. Would it be ok to siphon it out? The tank has been set up for about 5 months.

I had similar looking alge in a 15g nano I recently set-up. I sucked it out during a water change last week and it has yet to return. Im not sure what it was but looked alot like canyo though. Either way, good luck man!

I've siphoned it up, but the best method I've used was a small mesh scooper to scoop and sift it out of the sand. This is just my opinion, YMMV
