RO/DI Water Filtration alternative?
Can you use a regular PUR water filter(or any other brand) from your kitchen faucet for water changes? I would like to know if this will be adequate or if there is another alternative rather than buying a more expensive RO/DI filter specifically for aquariums.
any help or advice would be much appreciated! |

PUR would be just like running carbon. I have recently heard people running DI without the RO. Personally, i think if your using a PUR filter, might as well just use tap. They are really only good at improving taste.

Carbon does take out chlorine as well as some nasty organics. Carbon is a good filter and better than nothing but it doesn't do much for TDS, especially nitrates and phosphates that are the biggest reasons for purifying the water after chlorine removal.
I don't understand why you would run di without ro. The capacity for ro is so much higher. Its just cheaper. RO with a DI polisher is the most economical way to get pure water.

Well unless your tank is less than 3 gal then there is no turn key consumer system that can do what you want. The closest would be zero water. But you might as well buy a RO/DI unit , in the long run it will be MUCH cheaper, and the filters are standard.
