I would agree that freshwater tanks esp amano style are inspirational for reef 'scapes as well. I did freshwater planted tanks before my reef, and that's basically ALL about the artistic value of the arrangement. Lots of fun.

The trick is to know the growth pattern/color/texture of the plant (or coral!) you're putting in a particular place, and plan for how it will look when it grows in. In those planted tanks the "hardscape" which is sometimes rock but usually driftwood, takes up much less space than the rock work normally done in a reef tank. I've been happy to see more and more people doing a sparse arrangement of rock, and the beauty of it once the coral fills in.

Thanks everyone for sharing! I love seeing the "base" that holds the end result, but I'm also terribly curious to see some growth shots of these bare rock arrangements once coral has been placed! I'm about to arrange my rock and I find myself staring at it and turning it around in my mind like puzzle pieces, wondering "if I put it that way, what kind of coral would I put on that little ledge that would be available?" and then "well, if I do that, would it crowd out the plan I had over here?" and "how would the balance look if I did this?" and "oh dear, my fish need room to swim!" Sooo...I think I basically need to just do it and see how it turns out because I can't hold all that in my mind! If only there were no limits--I loved that newspaper thing and how the rock was similar, but rock doesn't have the same amount of potential to be shaped as newspaper does! I'm impressed with how close it was. If only we could just crumple the rock into the shape we want it and stick it in there, we'd all have amazing aquascapes!

Here's my 265, sorry it's a little murky from putting the pillar in the tank. I've also added a another small rock pile to the center of the tank to balance things out.

The water level is low, the return pump isn't on at this point.

A few older shots of my rimless. The shots are from various dates so you will see a difference in coral color, lighting color, and growth. I just redid the tank so I wont have any new shots for a while.

How it started:

Blue+ and Fiji purple on:

Full lighting:

I have had the walls of my tank done with Handi Foam and i have had no ill effects at all. I had it on my 240 as well, and now that coralline algae is taking over, it looks awesome! Plus I have GSP and XENIA growing on the walls!
