120 with a 40 breeder sump is a nice combo. From experience I would skip the corner overflow and do a coast to coast with beananimal plumbing.

I'm building a Redsea Reefer XL 425 right now, it's only 90g but it has basically the same footprint as a 120 (47"x22.6"x22"). I'm going with the following:

Light: Kessil AP700
Return: Eheim 1262
Powerheads: Vortech MP40QD
Skimmer: Reef Octopus 150 SSS
Sump/ATO: included with tank

I would strongly recommend reconsidering your lighting choice. For any of the 120cm wide tanks (350, 425) or larger I would go with two fixtures. I have a friend locally with a 350, and the AP700 is pretty concentrated right in the center of the tank, with shading on the sides of the tank. You might want that, but just something to be aware of.

I'd always still recommend 2x250w MH with radiums and good reflectors. One stop shop, simple, tried and true.

For a sump, I used a 29g tank drilled for my old 120g tank, and it worked with a moderately large Euro-reef skimmer, but of course a bigger sump is better. I went with the 29g because the tank was pre-plumbed with an external pump when I bought it used.

Standard Aqueon 120 (Mixed Reef - Mostly SPS)
Sump: 40b going to Trigger System 39 (40b works great - just wanted extra bells and whistles)
Return: MaxFlo 1500 (dialed down) on 1" Seaswirl
Overflow: Self drilled BeanAnimal (1.5" Bulkhead through tank 3 × 1" to sump)
Lighting: 4 Kessil a360we with 4 Ati t5, going back to 2 × 250 watt Radiums under Mini Lumenbright reflectors
Flow: 2 × Tunze 6105
Skimmer: Vertex Omega 150
Control: Digital Aquatics Archon

Good luck with your set-up.

Aqueon 120G, black silicone model
Sump: Aqueon proflex 4 (but i'd go trigger systems now-a-days, the aqueon has a wet/dry kit which was interesting to me because I wanted the option to do fresh or saltwater in this tank...)
Return: fluval sp4 1822gph
Overflow: drilled 2x holes for a custom-built modular marine 18" bean animal style gohst overflow
Lighting: you wouldn't care since my 120 isn't a reef tank, lol. i'd do kessils all day. that's what i have on my actual reef tank (which is a 60cube w/single a360we). I'd start with 2x a360we's or a single ap700, add more later if need be.
Control: 2016 neptune apex

no powerheads yet, but would likely be neptune wav's, i have one of those on my 60 cube (which is like half a 120, if you think about it, lol)

i think your choice of an ap700 is fine. if you find it's not enough then get a 2nd one later, but i wouldn't be too worried about this.

I appreciate the input. I did plenty of research on lighting for this tank and have seen many lit with one AP700 that look amazing. If it isn't enough, then I'll add another one later or move on to different lighting. Not sure why you are assuming that I need more light without knowing anything about my plans for the tank or its inhabitants

EDIT: Also, how high is it up from your friend's water line? At 15"+ there should be nice coverage.

mag drive pumps run pretty hot...

eheim's are not exactly the most efficient either but probably run cooler than mag drives and are known to be very reliable.

I would look at the fluval sp series as well, they're built to quite a high standard (ceramic shafts, italian made askoll pump block, etc), if you want a little more flow

Sounds like you know what you're getting into then.

His is about 12-14" or so over the tank, not sure of the exact height since I didn't set it up. He's using the stock AP700 arms, and I know he has raised it a few times now so he isn't at the bottom. I just assume that you need light since you're dropping $$$ on a fixture, but if you were planning on different degrees of light zones, then it's an optimal choice for that. Maybe the sides have higher PAR than looking at it by eye would suggest, but I noticed visible shading. I'm sure rockwork can also dramatically change the need too, he happens to have 2 islands instead of one rock wall, and the outsides of his islands are somewhat dimmer/shaded relative to the middle.

Well they do rate the AP700 as covering 48" at 15"-18" off of the water line, so he may not have it high enough.

But yeah, as for my own tank, I don't mind different lighting zones. I like to create as natural of a tank as possible and in nature you have two things: shimmer and varying intensities of light. And this is a tank that's not even put together yet, so we're talking about not likely having significant corals in there until next year (I'm very patient with letting the tank mature). If I ever deem it necessary, I'll happily add more lights

Thanks for the input again, advice and criticism is always welcome.

My Aqueon 120DT/40b sump uses the following:

Return Pump - eheim 1262
Reactors - 1 x BRS for carbon, and a TLF 150 for GFO, both run off a manifold from the return
Skimmer - ASMG2 w/ gate valve mod
Dosing pumps - 2 x BRS Drew's Dosers with 2 digital lamp timers
Lighting - 2 x AI Sol Blue set to 45W/65B/65RB 12on/12off with a short ramp up/down. ~12" above water
Powerheads - 4 x Koralia 1500gph, 2 on all the time, the other 2 alternate in short intervals

SPS are growing out of control to the point that I'll be fragging again after 3 months to the tune of 60+ frags. The LPS are doing just as well. 9 or 10 fish, the largest being a Tomini Tang.

I would also recommend the Fluvial SP 4 for a return pump. Ahem are also a very good pump. I have a Iwaki 30 for my 120 tank.

I'll chime in. I ran 2-250 halides with radiums in lumen bright reflectors along with t5 actinics for supplements. Skimmer was an ATB 1050 deluxe which is oversized but it did pull a ton out of the water. I had plans to upgrade in size down the road so I purchased this skimmer. Return pump was a Reef Octopus RC pump. Nice to have ability to increase or decrease flow with a touch of a button. Sump was a 125 tank that once again was put in place to handle the eventual increase of tank size down the road. I ran 4 tunze 6095's in the display.

got a 110G myself though 200G of water as i have attached a 50G frag tank.

Bought the 110 Reef ready for $500 with everything, sump, lights, return pump plumbing
Pump-Coralife TurboSea1090 i believe, thinking of switching to EcoTech L1 or m1
40G sump
Reef Octopus skimmer
going to run 2 Nano Box Quad wides
2 mp40's quite drives

excuse the messiness as i just changed the plumbing to PVC and was doing a leak test. made a mess of water under the sump haha. Sadly cant set these two tanks up yet as we are doing the tile to the house as you can see in these photos.
