pom pom crab worth it?
I'd like a pom pom crab to put in my 2.5 pico. They are really cool looking, but I'm pretty hesitant to spend 18 dollars on a little crab...
Unlike other people, I'm likely to see him often because the tank is so small. So, what do you think? is it worth the money? And should I worry about agression between it and my emerald crab? Thank you!!!

I have 3 in my 36g and love them. One of them is almost 3 years old and was one of the first critter in my 6g pico. They will hang out in the open if they don't feel threatened. Mine come out during feeding time.

I'd like one too, but am hesitating because I've heard the " Pom-Poms" fall off and the crab will rip off pieces of corals to replace them. Someone on another forum said the crab decimated his tank by pulling out pieces of corals and anemones in an effort to replace his " Pom-Poms". Has anyone else heard this or had it happen?

yeah, it can happen. Try to find one with really healthy anemones to prevent it.(although a crab with some bright zoas on his hand would look Amazing!)
If they loose just one, they will just split the remaining one. I've also heard of people having one crab with huge anemones share with one whose got lost

I'd like to have one, but I'm afraid he'll end up as a meal on my tank. I'd have to start a nano just for him.
Are they compatible with sexy shrimps? |

I would get rid of the emerald crab first, just to be on the safe side. I had one get really big, it will outgrow your 2.5 gallon for sure. I put my pom pom in a fluval edge with stock lighting. My LFS gave me a small mushroom to see if my lights would support any coral. My pom has carried it around ever since!

If it gets too big, I'll give her away, but right now she's only about 2/3 of an inch big.
I'd love to see a pom pom with a mushroom...that would look so funny!

I have four of these in a little breeding group and they are both amazing and completely harmless. The tank is a nano so they are out and about most of the time. They are with sexy shrimps, anemone shrimps, porcelain crab, pair of blue boxer crabs, mandarin and bluestripe pipefish among others.
Although not all had their anemones when i got them, they haven't shared them or taken anything of any corals to replace them. I did see one with a small aiptasia in its claws once but if you can put up with their semi reclusive nature and have a small peaceful setup, they are great. |

Sexy's would be my choice if i had to go for either. Pom poms are uber cool but sexy's are much more sociable and entertaining becaues of it. You should also be fine with them and the emerald because even if the crab turned naughty, which is highly unlikely, they are super fast.

I had a couple in a 50 gallon cube. My favorite thing to do at night was to play where's Waldo and find them, and the several sexy shrimp I had. Cheap entertainment IMO:-)

Old thread. Just put in my Pom Pom with a small female emerald. If I don't respond back that means they are getting along.

Recently obtained a sweet lil' pom pom crab with two healthy anenomes...things are going great! Last night, she released a crap ton of eggs, it was quite amazing...we sat around with the lights off just watching the "babies" (noea???) get around with their one giant leg they have...it was quite lovely...we've only had this pom pom for about a month, but things seem to be going quite well...only see it at night, of course...but we have plenty of action with all the sexy shrimp we have shakin' it all day long!

Bring an old thread back to life.
On a whim I bought two and they are in my 30G nano. Pretty cool creatures. I know their anemones have no real requirements though I wonder how they get enough light to stay happy. Just curious. Are they non photosynthetic or are the crabs clever enough to shove them out into the light to recharge them from time to time? |

I have a Pom Pom and it's nems are white which implies that it lacks zooxanthellae and bleached out. Keep in mind that the crab feeds them. Mine comes out during the day but never enough to be in the light. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
