I need a new return pump
First off I have a 40b, 20g sump, running a mag 5 currently with around 3.5' of head on a 3/4 return line. In addition I have the pump throttled back to around 75%. My pump is getting old, around 4 years and I want to upgrade to a quieter, cooler and more efficient pump that is smaller since I am already over kill with the mag 5. The two pumps I am looking at are the Sicce 1.5 and the ehiem 1250. Any opinions on these two pump and should they be enough to run my tank, or should I go to the sicce 2.0 / ehiem 1260?
Thanks |

Go for a sicce 2.0 and throttle it back. They are silent workhorse's.

I second Sicce or you could look into one of the DC pumps that seem to be getting good reviews. Waveline, Speed Wave, Diablo, etc.

I have the same setup. I am using a Sicce 2.0 and am VERY happy with it. The sucker means it when it says "silent." It is adjustable so you don't even need a valve on the return line. The outlet on the 2.0 also works great for a 3/4" return, so easier plumbing. I do have my Sicce adjusted towards the lower end, so you could do the 1.5 and probably not have a problem with that. But the 2.0 would give more wiggle room.

I have no experience with Sicce pumps. I do have 25+ years using the same eheim 1260. In those 25 years, I have replaced the impeller once, and I clean it about once a year if I remember to. It is silent and trouble free. For my 120 build I didn't even consider anything other that eheim (a 1262 that Dr F&S had on sale for $89)(not a typo!!!)

After many pumps, I would go with a Sicce 1.5 or 2.0 or a eheim compact 2000+. Both absolutely silent and reliable.

Definitely Sicce. I have a modified 2.0 (impeller) on my AquaMaxx EM200 skimmer and it is dead silent. You can run two Sicce 2.0 and use almost the same wattage as the Eheim 1260.

I would consider the DC pumps. I replaced a Mag5 w/ a Speedwavd DC-3000. According to specs, it should be pushing around 600gph @ 3' head, and is listed as 25 watts. My informal observation is that it flows slightly more than a Mag5, but has a controller that allows you to adjust the flow.
Extremely quiet pump. Downside is that they don't have enough history yet to know how they hold up long-term. |

Keep in mind that you only need 2.5-3x turnover. 3x is 120gph. You can do nicely with one of the smaller options. Even an Eheim 1048 (~110gph, 10 watts) would work.

I'm personally using an eheim 1260 on my tank and it is a very good pump. have to install and valve to throttle it down a little but works flawlessly. It is a good workhorse and known to be reliable. Have not used the sicce pumps but just giving my opinion on the eheim pumps.

Thanks everyone for the input, I have a sicce 0.5 on my zeovit reactor, and found the adjustment didnt really do much (the gph basically stayed too high). I am leaning towards the sicce 1.5, since the 2.0 is more than I have along which is already too much. |
