SWC 160 cone vs. ASM G2
Anyone have any opinions on this? I have always (10+ years) used ASM or Euro-reef skimmers. I'm setting up a 72g bowfront RR tank w/30g sump and was thinking of trying something new, lol. Not that I'm complaining about my asm or euro-reef skimmers, I just have nothing to compare them to for insump skimmers. I knew the name so I went with them.... and stayed with them. Are the cone skimmers really that much better? I need opinions from someone who has used both. I'm about 1 click away from pre-ordering the SWC 160 cone unless someone can give me reason not to. The Asm G2 is the same price, so it comes down to performance.
FYI ** I do not do sps at this time, so this will be a softy and anemone tank....lightly stocked. Thanks for the help!! Angie |

Though the sicce 2500 on the cone can be a little finnicky at times, it is still leaps and bounds ahead of any sedra pump. You won't be dissapointed with the cone.

Thank you....I just didn't want to stay with a "brand" skimmer just because of the name. If I can do better for the same $$ I will.

I just preordered the SWC 160. After 10+ years I could use a change. If for some reason I do not like the performance, I have my "old reliables" lol.
Now I just can't wait for them to ship!! |

The SWC 160 Cone comes with an Atman 2500 pump that pulls 600 LPH of air.
The ASM G2 comes with a Sedra 3500 and pulls ALOT less air. About 350+ LPH. A huge difference. Just based on air pull alone, the SWC will skim much better. Factor in the efficient shape of the body. It will skim much, much, much better than the stock ASM G2. Other than price there isn't much to compare.

The title of this thread is SWC Cone 160 Vs. ASM G2. Not Cone Vs. Cylinder.
And back to the topic. The SWC 160 is a better skimmer than the ASM G2 for a multiple of reasons. Bubble plate + Steeper Transition+ Greater air pull+ Better balance of the pump matched to the body and neck size+Lower wattage+Heavier acrylic and acrylic type+Drain plug + pricepoint+ smaller footprint. The list is pretty long. It's a new skimmer and time will tell. But it already has a lot going for it, that the ASM G2 doesn't. G2 comes with thin acrylic, no drain plug, a pump thats undersized and mismatched for it's body, low air pull, no bubble plate to reduce turbulence. It works, but is a pretty dated design.

Thanks Everyone.....I'm VERY glad I opted to preorder the SWC 160. It sounds like there will only be 1-2 problems with the cone......I will now get to see what my ASM and Euro-reef DIDN'T skim out and I will have to wonder why I stayed with them for sooooooo long.

ASM and Euroreef were good for their time. No shame in using them. It was only a couple of years ago, they were the most used skimmers. They still work. Skimmers just have evolved a fair amount in the last couple of years. Pump selection got better. Airpull increased. Design got better. The amount of skimming available for the price is better now.

I'm getting excited for the new skimmer to get here!! We have our local annual frag swap comming up on the 27th so it will be just in time My 72g tank is running skimmerless right now. Not a problem since I only have wood polyps, GSP, and a yellow tang in there. Will be full of corals after the 27th though.
