Angry Neptune Display Module Random Beeping Issue

Greetings!

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue... I have an apex Lite system with the display module. Sometimes when an audible alarm is going off (either the warning alarm or alarm) the display will go to a high pitch beep nonstop (until I intervene or the alarm noise sounds again. This beep also will randomly start going off when there is not an alarm event in progress. There have been several mornings when I wake up and go down stairs to find the display beeping. To get it to stop I can 1. press a button on the display 2. manually turn on the warming or alarm outlet and the sound clears it out. All modules are on the latest firmware, and this issue has been present for me in 3 different versions now. Any ideas? It's driving me crazy!

Here is a recording of the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OM2bxAqn8Sw

Is your firmware current (or at least close)?

Does your display 'sw rev' in the Module Setup screen show (OK)?

If both of those are good then you might just have a faulty display.

Greetings,

I am on current firmware. The display module shows 009(ok). I have also submitted an update firmware command to the display and it updates ok. All other functions appear to be fine.

I have the same problem with a constant tone sometimes when there is an alarm event. The only way for me to stop it is to manually turn it off.

Periloy are you sure you don't have something programmed for SndAlm or SndWarn?

No I don't have any program on sndwrn. I use sndalm and I have it set to beep once when alarming. Sometimes when sndalm is on it would beep once a few of times then just stick in a constant tone until I press a button on the display. Turning sndalm off or even issuing a reboot command from telnet does not stop it. It's actually weird that the controller would reboot but the tone does not stop.

Sent an email to Neptune

Okay... So I email Neptune support and here's what he had to say:

Matt,

I've given it some thought. I believe you should reinitialize your outlet configuration (via the browser configuration>misc setup> initialize outlets), then reprogram your outlets. You can not reload a current saved configuration. Copy and paste all of your programming to word, then paste it back in after re-initializing. This will mean a lot of copy and pasting, but should resolve the matter. I experienced this with another user couple of days ago, and this resolved the matter. Please let me know if you need any further clarification or have any other questions. Otherwise, keep me posted.

I'm going to start this... UGH! and will see how it works. I'll report my findings...

Let me know if it works for you. It seems like a PIA but if it gets rid of that annoying sound I'll do it for sure.

Alright... So spent a good hour and a half manually copying and pasting all my outlet names and programming settings in notepad. Man was that fun. Then I nuked all my existing settings and setup from scratch as instructed. Within 1 hour of doing this, I encountered the beeping issue again. I replied back to Neptune support with details who replied with a request with access to port 23.

So I have opened port 23 to them so they can telnet in and take a look. I'll let you know what their response is.

peiloy3196 When your display beeps... If you manually turn on the Alarm or Warning sound will it stop for you? If mine starts beeping and I turn on one of the outlets (that has a sound affect) it will stop the next time it sounds.

I have never tried that, but I will give it a try and let you know.

Was Neptune able to find anything when they logged in?

Well, they were not able to find anything wrong with it through their diagnostic process. They have now requested that I ship the display at my cost to them so they can look at it and troubleshoot it. So I sent it to them this eviening.

After hearing prior to my purchasing the controller that the Apex is a solid reliable controller and their customer service is unbeatable I'm very disappointed to say the least for a few reasons: What if this doesn't fix the issue? Not only is it an inconvenience to not have the display, but it has now cost me to send it to Neptune. Say it doesn't fix the issue, what if you need the actual apex unit itself? Am I required to pay additional shipping for the Apex unit also? Going without the controller and maintaining my tank isn't possible at this time, which of course is why I purchased the Apex to begin with. grr. It's always somethin'...

Hey Mal,
Were they able to fix it or figure out what the problem was?

Did the new display fix your problem?

The new display did not fix the issue. After more troubleshooting they decided to replace the base unit, since then I haven't had any issues.

Had same issue and found problem was my ATO switch condition in a active outlet. When ATO activates I created a single warning beep at times it got stuck in a continuous tone. What seem to fix problem was creating a virtual outlet for the ATO switch. So maybe the problem is a similar switch condition using warning or alarm tones. Think what happens is the switch partially closes for split second then opens again this might be jamming the alarm trigger.
