Brown Stuff on Sand

I think i have diatoms, there is this brown, and rust colored stuff that covers my sand bed, it gets turned and worked by my nassirus snails every night, and comes back the next day. When do they go away? My tank is still fairly new 29, been running since Late December. Not yet 3months old

I also have some hair algae, going to get a sea hare, and set up a AquaClear Fuge,

does algae go away on its own in new tanks?

My tank is not heavily stocked. And i haven't added anything new to it lately. Running SeaChem PhosBan continously, getting the fuge this weekend.

Updating Lighting, because I was running some old bulbs.

Insight?

With the information you've provided my best guess is diatomes. They will go away on their own in a week or so.

I will be

Changing Bulbs adding Coralife 2 65w, with Lunar lights
AquaClear 70 Fuge, with Sand, LR rubble, Chaeto
Sea Hare (hair algae) /fighting conch (sand bed)

Are those the appropriate steps for getting my algae undercontrol

Algea blooms pretty much have to run their course in a new set up. Sounds like you are doing things right though. You might add a few mexican turbo snails also. They clean up pretty good.

Ask your LFS if you can return whatever when they finish their job.

when i updated my lighting is when the bloom really blew up. my tank is newer than yours and i added a sea hare and it has cleaned it up, tank looks better like the problem is cleared up...for now anyway.

i think its because im using old bulbs, so are you saying that since YOU added new bulbs, ur bloom just got worse?

Old bulbs with a diminished spectrum are more likely to cause algea than new bulbs. I actually put a piece of live rock with hair algea on it under a new set of MH bulbs a few years back. The algea was gone within 2 weeks. I had no phosphates and very low nitrates at the time, so it didn't have much to feed on, but it was growing under old bulbs.

Just my little scientific, means not much, experiment. All tanks are different and it certainly could have shown growth under new bulbs also. Just not the norm.
