I'm really enjoying this thread, some great design examples (and some not so great, ha ha).
Hope to contribute a little more to this thread in the future.

The Red Sea Max may qualify - just depends what setting it's placed in IMHO.

Excellent thread !! Also, thanks to all the folks with the really sweet tanks, Big and Small, I love reef tanks and in my opinion, there really isnt a bad tank unless its neglected and the critters are in harms way, I honestly dont think i could ever have a reef tank big enough for me tho, unless its the Great Barrier Reef, he he, Once again, Thanks everyone and keep up the great work !!

This is my 600 gal with a stainless steel hood and stand, I had all of this custom built. I'm wondering if this qualifies for modern....

I have a hard time seeing it as modern because of the rest of room not being modern at all...Very unique though!

jobiwan,
It is modern, but unlike some others here where the theme seems to be 'ultra modern', yours would fall under the category more of 'post modern'. Michael Graves, the architect/designer, would be a good example of post modern. Many people have mixed feelings about post modern being part of modernism. I think it is part of modernism, with Michael Graves Portland Building being one of my favorite pieces of modern architecture. |

Yeah, I just can't get the wife to remodel, it was hard enough getting approval for this tank....
What exactly is post modern, I'm curious about that, but I'm ignorant in the ways of architecture

That would be awesome, I wish we didn't have the fireplace, I could do just that, we never use the damn thing, I'll try to convince the wife...

Yeah I think black walls would make that tank! Its a really cool, unique set up. Did you have it built or build it yourself? Cool either way!

based on my knowledge of the field and opinoin i believe modernism is distinct, i dont think so many have mixed feelings towards inclusion of it, than they do of actual post modern works. postmodernism is in reaction to modernism, and often is critical of it. not one in the same. post modern architecture took a leap away from modern architecture by heavily using figures and ornaments to "decorate". jobiwan, although not modern it is very unique and give you props for doing something different and creative.

Jobiwan,
You could always cover the brick on the fireplace with matching metal. If you're going to commit to something that different, you need to go all the way-unless your wife pays the mortgage and gives you an allowance.

IMHO its not very modern. the stand is very overwhelming. if it were the plain metal i think it would look more modern but the brushed/swirled metal really takes away from the tank and the stand it self. I don't think it looks bad i don't think it would fall under the category of ultra modern jut this is just my opinion though

I have to admit, I was very apprehensive about this, I thought the stand would totally overwhelm the tank. It actually accents it to a level I would not have thought possible, but it just can't be depicted in a photo unfortunatly, it's one of those things that can only be appreciated by seeing it in person. The photo's I posted are featuring only the 840 watts of actinic, I am gradually acclimating everything to the additional 1600 watts of MH, don't want to hammer things too much yet, just got the hood in place yesterday, prior to that just had 500 watts of hqi over it, I'll post more photos when I get tired of staring at it....

Oh, and I should mention that the swirled look involves a process of three different layers, it gives a perspective of looking into a three dimensional depth, which gives the illusion of looking into the water , ties in nicely, another thing that can't be picked up in a photo I'm afraid. Also, with the texture the finish provides any smudges, fingerprints, drops of water etc can't be seen, with a clean finish one woud be constantly dealing with this, I'm way too lazy for that...
