Stand design

Wanted to see if you guys would give me some input on my stand design. It will be holding appropriately 65 gallon tank, 36x21x20. Construction is of poplar, mostly pocket screws and glue. The 4 legs that support the actual weight are 2x2 poplar. It will have a 1” table top 1.5” larger all around than the aquarium and 1/2 plywood bottom behind the cabinet doors. I’m adding some small gussets to help with sheer force. The side frames will be filled with 1/4 birch to mirror the shaker style doors.

Looks great...glad to see someone that knows how to work with wood and not use 2x4s...

Thanks! This is the first one I've done that hasn't been skinned 2X4s.

Pretty well finished but the finish. I'll update tomorrow.

Very nice - Please post pics of the finished product - I'm planning on something kind of similar for a 40 breeder - like an older, farmhouse style table looking stand - made from poplar and some reclaimed wood for the top and bottom shelves - no sump.

Not doing a sump either, setting up a JBJ 65 all in one. Going to set up ATO in the stand and maybe dosing pump down the road.

First attempt with inset door and hidden hinges. Wish I would have made them 1/8" larger each way. Side inserts will match.

add a bead detail around the door - yes you'd need to cut it down some more, but you could make up that 1/8

the horizontal grain insert the finished look?

I’ll see how they look when I completely fit them and decide if the gaps look too wide. Honestly I’ll just remake them if it does, they didn’t take long.

As of now everything just has a few coats of shellac so that’s basically the natural finish. I was debating leaving the framing natural and doing the top and inserts an accent color but I’m not good at deciding on what looks good.

This is almost exactly what I am looking to accomplish, this is great.

The only real exceptions I want to make are instead of using the 1x's, I would be using 2 x 2's all around - legs and horizontal members. I want to use angle iron / brackets instead of wood gussets, and it would be entirely open (bottom shelf would be there too for aesthetics and additional bracing) and I might consider putting a backer on it - not sure yet though.

It's only for a 40 breeder so I think I would be in good shape -

This is a great build - super excited to see someone think outside the box with DIY stands than the typical 2 x 4 construction

Looks great! I too just built a stand for my small drag tank. Solid walnut with maple trim and a little carving, first time for that.

There are so many Sheer points on this build. Thats scary. Plus only four corners taking the WHOLE weight.
