Remove overflow from 60g Marineland cube RR?

I'm in the process of moving from a 65g standard to a 60g Marineland cube. I bought the reef ready version because I couldn't find the non-rr version locally. I've got the stand built and almost ready to set it up, but I'm having second thoughts about the overflow setup. I've read a lot of threads about people complaining about the overflow on these tanks due to noise, really slow flow, lack of surface skimming, etc.

So I'm tempted to cut out the overflow. My thoughts to replace it was to plug the bulkheads and then buy a glass holes 700gph overlow and drill a new hole for that to the left of the current holes, plenty of room there to do it. The other option is to utilize the current hole (although it's only a 1" bulkhead), and DIY an overflow.

Anyone done this on one of these cubes? Or is anyone with this cube actually happy with the built in overflow setup?

do you have any pics of the current overflow box so i can get a better understanding..
Also can you fit a 1.25" durso standpipe in it? dursos have always worked great for me reliable and silent..

I have the same cube. I am very happy with it other than the noise you mentioned but I ended up silencing it.

There's no way to fit anything in the overflow. Marineland obviously put the bulkheads, elbow and return in, and then siliconed the overflow on. You can't even fit a hand in there. One option is an external durso like setup if I keep the overflow. I kind of like the idea of getting rid of it though since it goes from the top to bottom of the tank. It would save some room. Here are some pics I found from another thread, not my pics. You can see how tight this thing is

if you do an external durso on it it should be fine.. Man that is a crappy design for an overflow box..

i would not buy the glass holes overflow. it will not be quieter then the set up that came with the tank. because the holes look to be drilled high up you could build a coast to coast over flow and if you drilled 2 more holes you could use the bean animal approach. see thread referenced below for more details.

Yea it really is a crappy design. I regret not just getting a non-rr version and doing it myself now.

cilyjr, I had the herbie setup on my last tank (similar to the beananimal setup, but with only a full siphon and emergency drain), but the issue I had with it was that the sump water level didn't self level. Because of small variations of whatever (water temp, air pressure, sun spots), the water level would vary constantly making it impossible to reliably use a float switch top off. I had to instead top off with a peristaltic pump set to a certain volume. I never liked that so I scrapped it and went back to a regular drain and an on-demand top off. So I guess my question is, does that beananimal setup have the same issue?

Those are my pics. I got my tank running. I quieted the overflow by reducing the flow. I am planning on running 2 Vortechs in the tank so I am not counting on the return pump for tank flow.

I am getting surface skimming on mine. The overflow has 2 intakes. If you want more surface skimming you can probably block the lower intake.

I have a 60g cube and drilled it , installed a gl******* overflow and its quiet. I had the rr version when they first came out and it was a PIA.

this is odd i have not had this problem and i use a gravity float valve for ato as well. but perhaps it is because i am dealing with a larger water volume. a 1/2 up or down in the overflow does not make much difference in a 75 gallon sump i suppose.

When I was running that Herbie drain in my 20L sump, the water level in the return section would go up and down as much as 3" during a week or day sometimes. It was never constant. You're right though, this is with a small return section, so what was 3" in mine is probably a lot less in a large sump.

to reduce the sound of gurgling from the air intake of the pipe i installed a simple silencer from a reef octopus skimmer that i had lieing around. also, i installed a durso standpipe on the outside. the tank works great, I'll post a picture of the plumbing and silencer fix as soon as i get home.

this should give you an idea. i know the post is old but someone could use it one day

this should quiet things down quite nicely. i can still hear everything but it's so quiet that it doesn't matter.

You can fit a Herbie in that cube but it takes a bit of patience and a bit of Drumel work to make it fit. I used the 3/4" as the drain and the 1" for the E drain. Dead silent and running for three years. I can't describe exactly how I got it in there but I am not that talented so I am sure anyone can get it to fit with patience.
