Id of worm and how to get rid of it help
Worm identify and how to get rid of
Just saw my tank this evening and freaked out seeing 4 of these nasty, quite large, worms crawling in and out of a rock. Can someone please identify them and tell me if I should get rid of them and how do I get rid of them? Really freaked me out. I tried to look it up and it appears to perhaps be a Fireworm and from what I read they are nasty critters. I have corals, fish, and I'm very very worried. I don't like the look of these things and they are pretty big. PLEASE HELP! Thanks. Mary |

Do you also have the normal bristle worms in your tank?
Where did you get the rock, and how long have you had these bad worms?

They look like common bristle worms to me, but hard to tell from the pics.

That is a Brislte worm and a good part of the clean up crew. You probably have hundreds in your tank.

No, look up hermodice carunculata. There are pix online so you can confirm what you're seeing.
I have been decades in this hobby and have NEVER seen anybody report an actual fireworm, but this month---two of them. Rock must be coming in from some new (I think Atlantic) source. I suggest you put in a worm trap, which can be had on line. Common bristleworms are an asset, but these guys with the 'puffs' down their sides are not.

When in doubt, get it out. I'd go with the worm trap and just flush them
