Gluing frags to rock
What are some simple methods used to glue frags directly to the rocks under water?
I say under water just in case said rock in unable to be removed. Thanks |

I usually do a super glue gel + 2 part epoxy + super glue gel sandwich.
I make a little ball of epoxy and glue the frag/ frag plug to one side, then put a glob of the super glue gel on the opposite side. Hold it under water for a few seconds and pull it out to form a skin over the super glue gel. Then I move it into place, a little twist/ press into place will break the skin that's formed.

Gel super glue is best. Apply above the water on the frag and place under water and hold on the rock for a few seconds... nothing more too it

+1 Exactly how I do it. Super glue alone usually ins't strong enough to hold the plug to the rock(your rock isn't flat to glue to). All the glue does is hold the plug long enough for the epoxy to set up.

I use small amounts of 2-part expoxy.
I turn off flow for 2 hours to set. |

With the super glue/epoxy sandwich, you wouldn't have to turn off the flow. The super glue is only used to hold the frag until the epoxy sets.

Definitely use some epoxy. I ran out on my last couple frags and just used super glue gel. Stupid urchin pulled them right up and wore them around til I caught her doing it and rescued them.

instead of using the epoxy/super glue sandwich, I've been using Aquamaxx ReefWeld instead of epoxy. Works just the same but doesn't make my skimmer go crazy.

Yup, its all I use.
The epoxy+glue+epoxy method sounds like it would make an awful bulky pile of glue. With superglue gel the glue can be nearly invisible. The key seems to be to first smear a little glue on the rock with your finger, then put glue on the frag out of water, then put frag on the glue spot. |

BRS TV (on YouTube) has a whole episode on this, with many different methods. It’s great.
