EVOreef

It's been a few months with out a reef tank since I moved. I can't set up a large tank, so this little nano will have to do for now.

after the tank is up and running for a while and everything starts to settle in, I will convert it to an sps dominate reef. Im keeping it ultra simple, chaeto, marine pure, and water changes every 2-3 weeks. after tank is mature I will think about dosing 2 part cal&alk.

Specs:

Tank
Fluval EVO 13.5

Mods:
covered vents on chamber 1 - left one vent open to flow into chamber 2
covered hole in center
cut 18x11 piece of abs for bottom of tank
black egg crate diy rear compartment for chamber 1

upgrades:

Lighting upgrade
Dsuny led 22"
120mm fans x3

Return Pump upgrade
Ehiem compact 1000 (future upgrade)

Circulation
Jebao CP-25 (future upgrade)

Bio media
filter floss & chaeto in chamber 1 (will use led that came with tank for fuge)
marine pure bio balls in chamber 2

ATO- (future upgrade)

Dosing unit- (future upgrade)

here are some pics of current progress

I am on the same platform and also a new build. I am hard into long term stabilizing algae vs bacteria usage of nutrients at this point.

Thanks scatter... I’m still building and putting things together. I’m looking at least 2months before I add anything. Going to use a fellow reefers established water to fill tank, some chaeto, and some live rock rubble to get my tank going fast. Plus gonna use Red Sea reef mature to cycle tank faster.

Chaeto is impossible to find here. I am going to use the sea lettuce from algaebarn for export for now.

I love seeing thought out builds.

aquatic life hybrid t5- gonna try to make it 12 inches wide to fit flush over tank. Need to shave off 4 inches, hopefully my leds will still fit in middle. I will hang light 5-6 inches over tank. Bummer cause now ill have light flow over from tank, but I really want t5/led combo

@RobSpeed13 how long have you had the 1k's? I thought it was gonna be overkill but its perfect with amazing flow patterns.

In my quest to supplement T5 with my leds. I've benn looking at the Aquatic life hybrid fixture 24inches long by 18inch wide. I was just going to cut and Dremel holes to make it 12 inches wide. this fixture with 4 ati bulbs would cost me around $300.00 not including the $149.99 I already spent for my LED for a total of $450

I was on youtube and came across t5ho fixtures for $90-100. looking into the dimensions 23x12.5x2.5 which would be perfect to use for the evo. I ended up getting the Durolux - 2 FT 4 Bulbs - T5 HO Indoor Grow Light - DL8024 Fluorescent.
https://www.amazon.com/Durolux-Indoo...%2C128&sr=8-13

this fixture is only $63..... with bulbs I will be less than 150 for everything.

I plan on removing hammer tone reflector along with bulbs. I will relocate two middle t5 sockets closer to edges to make room for the LED fixture that is 4.75 inches wide and mount it in the middle. Then cut holes on top of fixture for the fans. Spray paint fixture black, add reflectors back in, mount led, add ati bulbs, mount sanded plexiglass to defuse led light, add fans and I should have an amazing LED/T5 fixture for less than 300 dollars and it will sit flush onto of evo. in theory this is how it will go down, ill receive the fixture on Tuesday from amazon. Cant wait to start this project.

Hi, that light fixture mod is pretty slick. Nice that it covers the tank perfectly. Where are your fans though? Does condensation in the hood cause problems? I'm thinking of a box to house my light and fan but it would sit on top of my stock cover. Here's my current "temporary" set up.

Thanks, no problems with hood or condensation. It’s perfect, heat is only issue drilled holes for my fans on top. If i were to do it again i would drill 40mm holes in back, and stick usb fans back there to keep a flush look.

@Nrdau- I miss the sand lol. Other than that everything is great, with my hood I need the two 40mm fans in back to help with heat.

In 6 months, the bottom will be completely covered in Coraline age and it'll look great. Here's mine.
