3ft 65 gallon tank with MP40WES?

Hi everyone,

After an extended break from the hobby, about 4 years, I’m getting ready to dive back in. I used to have a 4ft wide 120 gallon mixed reef, and I luckily kept most of the equipment from that tank in storage.

So my question is with my new 3ft wide 65 gallon tank, do you think the set of MP40s I had on the old tank would be overkill? I’m looking to do a bare bottom LPS/SPS tank this time. I thought about maybe selling the set of MP40s and getting a set of MP10s, but would rather save the money if I could.

Based on the Ecotech calculator, it looks like I could have one on at a time, but 2 x MP10s seemed to be much more in the sweet spot on their calculator.

I’d keep mp40”s and run lower, so less noise and as corals grow and fill in you’ll be all set. Also, running bare bottom the sps will be happy with added flow. I’ve got mp10 and 40 on 40 breeder and smaller pump is running 100 percent and larger is around 50.

I agree. MP40s have a wide flow rate and you can turn them down pretty low.

My opinion, LPS won't do well with the MP40 because of too much flow. I went from 40 to 10s in a 75 and that was a good choice.

Be mindful that; if you run the MP40 too low, you can't effectively use it in certain wave modes/functions.

I switched an MP40 for an MP10 on my 40B.

I run 2x MP40s on my 60g cube and don't have any issues with coral happiness or sandstorms. Obviously I can't blast them on high, but running them at 50% or less seems to work fine. If it works on a 2' tank, your 3' tank should also be fine. There's no harm in setting it up and seeing if you like it. The only reason I considered going down to MP10s is to reduce the footprint on the side of the tank.

Ultimately, either is fine. If I was in your shoes and buying new, I'd buy MP10s to save money. Since I had my MP40s from my old 120, I saved the money and used them.

Running 2 MP40s in a 4 foot tank. Have noticed you can dial them back pretty significantly. Should keep them for the wider flow pattern.

I would use the 40's. Firstly you already have them and you won't get enough on a resell to buy 2 10's so why bother?

Secondly you can always turn them down, then when things grow in you won't need to add another PH. You'll simply have to turn them up.

I have 2 10's, 2 pp8's, and a gyre in my 80 cube which is mostly LPS and I have no issues with blasting them too much.
