Protect top brace?

Just installed metal halides and my LFS was telling me they can be hard on the top brace, including the center strips (have a 180 gallon). Can anything be done to protect it? Is it the heat, light intensity, or both?

We picked up a tank that the heat melted the center brace and it pulled apart. Heat will kill them and when they get soft enough, the tank will bow and pull the brace apart.
Cheers! Mark

Anyway to protect them? I’ve got my light 12” off the water and they don’t feel hot, just warm.

I think you have to be careful that the lights are NEVER directly above the center

Wrap the top brace in aluminum foil or paint them white
