You can start off with some simple clip lights and compact fluorescent bulbs. A lamp in the front and the back will definitely give you growth and if you like how the scrubber works you can invest in LEDs down the road.

Not to sound stupid but what is a clip light? I am thinking of converting my scrubber to LEDS.

I'm sure those lights would work. The "clip on" spiral compact florescent light also grows algae. I bought 50 660nm 3w leds on ebay for less than 20 bucks. I then build my own algae scrubber lights with clear casting epoxy.

Search online for LED grow lights. I know there are lots of strip lights that can be cut into short strips. You may be able to find something closer to the dimensions you want.
