Help Identify Disease

Hi all! I don't have an aquarium, but in my opinion you all know more about coral than the scientists I have met. I am hoping you can help.

See attached photos. The tips of these acropora are dying and getting covered with algae. Any ideas on the cause?

More important, what should I do? Should I cut off the dead part in hopes of stopping the spread? Should I cut it all the way down to healthy tissue? Any advice welcome!
Thanks!
