red tail triggerfish
I often see pix of them in peoples reef tanks, & I have always loved triggers. This one from what I've reed seems the most reef safe of the triggers. It sounds like the only real problem would be they may eat your shrimp. Any one out there have these guys in a reef tank, & have they bothered any thing?

I've heard that they are pretty much reef safe however yes they will eat inverts. I don't have personal experiences with triggers but i do have experience with puffers, a close relative of them.

I have one that has been in my tank for close to a year. Model citizen, to the best of my knowledge he hasn’t touched a coral, snail, crab or shrimp. |

Sargassum Triggers are Pelagic, I.E. they live in the water column not around and on the reef, I suspect this has a lot to do with their reef-safeness. They live around floating piles of Sargassum. I have had mine for almost 2 years, wonderful and entertaining fish. I think you could get them to coexist with certain crustaceans, though any opportunistic Trigger will take advantage of any easy dinner if he's hungry...They are still Triggers. I only have soft corals, but he has never even looked at one.
Mine swims against the powerhead stream for hours on end, and spits water at me as fast as he can get it in his mouth any time I open the top of the tank...I don't know that I've had a more quirky fish.

Assuming you're talking about X. ringens, which is more commonly called the sargassum triggerfish, then you will usually be OK.
Of course, you could be talking about one of the other redtailed triggers, so I'm not sure.

This is gotta be the 10th thread in 2 weeks on reef safe triggers. Aside, I had a sargassum + 2 blue throats & 2 nigers @ one point. None of mine bothered inverts that I witnessed. The largest trigger was a Niger and he did bully the other triggers.
