I just got a stick of mangrove, it is more than 4' tall from root to leaves, which is far too tall for my taste.
How can I trim it? Would it live if I cut it into 2 across the "trunk"? Would the top half grow roots and the bottom half grow leaves? Also, why would you guys bury it in the substrate? Would it live by just suspending the roots in the water? Thanks.

Has anyone been able to keep these for longer than a year? I never have. I suspect part of the reason is that these plants typically grow in marsh brackish water. Water that leans more towards fresh than salt.. So the over abundance of salt eventually kills them. This is of course prolonged bu misting them with ro fresh water on a regular basis but it seems eventually it is enviable. If anyone has other experiences with these lasting longer than say a year I would appreciate yur input.

I have. Don't disturb the roots once they start growing. Instantly kills them. And spray them with freshwater as much as possible.

I recently switched my lights to LED for my refugium , I was using power compact, but i think it was too strong for the mangroves, the leaves kept burning and dying, even with misting.
I used PVC setup with green garden string to suspend them above the water. I did notcie that the leaves on some plants seem a little droopy right now, does anyone know why this could be happening.

I'm looking at building what you could call a major mangrove/ marine plant refuge system. Big question is how much sand bed and how deep of water above the sand bed to maximize such a system? The way I am planning on building it I can increase the water level in the refuge as the plants grow up to 2 feet of water. Will this work?

Is there any other idea for floating your mangroves other than styrofoam?

I reccomend using PVC pipe to form a creative display, i tried the styrofoam and it was jsut messy and i was afraid it would leach chemicals into the system. I simply went to Home Depot and spent some time in the PVC plumbing area, bought some elbows and unions, it was very easy and you can be creative. Also, i reccommend using the green strechy garden string that people use for plants, they also sell it at the garden section at Home Depot

I've had the same 4 mangroves under cfls with daily misting for 3 years, they are about 32'' tall at this point with a few branches each. They've been in a refugium this entire time, but I plan to move them into the topless display, island style.

Frank what do you consider to deep a sandd bed to keep the mangroves from streching? How many t5's are you using above them? Any recomendations for a 20 long with 24" t5's, how many and how high you keep them above themangrove? Thanks for any help.

I just bought a bunch. The vendor said a "basic" rule of thumb is that if you can feel the heat on the back of your hand when you touch the top of the leaves, the lights are too close. since this is my first time with mangroves, I'm using their advise as a start. I'm also going wih the bamboo technique to get a really nice root system to form

More for aesthetics than doing anything but I threw a few in my overflow and they were happy for a couple years until I moved and broke the system down.
