What Camera Do You Use?
Hi, All.
Who thinks they get really amazing pics of their reef tanks with their SLR? If they do, what camera/lense do you use? Show some examples! Looking into a camera to shoot my tank lit with Kessil A360 Tuna Blues and KZ T5s. Thanks! Joey |

Nikon D300
Nikon 105mm 2.8 macro So you know, I can do that with any DSLR and a quality macro lens. It's more the idiot behind the camera than the camera itself.

Now Sony a6300. Still use my Canon 100 macro with an adapter. Camera bag is 15lbs lighter.

Being the idiot behind the viewfinder, it hardly matters what I shoot.
Also, life events have been such that I don't have an aquarium(s) at this time. (work site shut down, interstate move, buy a property, sell a property, yada yada) That said, for what it's worth, I currently shoot a Nikon 800E that I picked up earlier this year. The 200mm f/4 is my macro lens. For reasons only fathomable to Nikon, they call it a micro lens. I primarily shoot fungi, lichens, mosses, etc, around my property these days. I test drove the 105 2.8 VR "micro". It is a fine off hand portrait and such lens, but I very much disliked its focus breathing when using it for macro. Others may not be as bothered by that. Here is the only photo I could immediately find on my desktop which was taken with the 200mm in macro. It needs better post. I'm the idiot behind driving that, too. Canon for me. Have had many from the original 10D, 5D, 1Ds Mark iii, and most recently 7D mark ii and a 6D. I really like Canon, and especially the marco 100mm lens. That said I recently bought a used Sony A7R and the image quality is quite impressive. It's taking some getting used to since I am so used to the Canon ergonomics. Some might argue this, but I think today nearly any platform will be a solid contender. Get some bodies in your hands and see how they feel, and how easy you can use the buttons you'll need. If you don't like how a camera feels or how you use it it really won't matter how good the images are because you just wont use it much.
Some really old images. Probably with the original 5D but I've lost track now.Just happened to have this still on Photobucket . Performs well in Arctic conditions as well |

well, let's see, a couple of Nikon cybershots, but those are just for fun. Canon 6D, T5, T3i are my heavy lifters.
A couple from the 6D today. (with flash) Handheld without flash. ISO was up around 2500 |

On the subject of the topic, I just got a Sony 6500 for XMAS. It's my first "real" camera and I have a lot to learn. My iPhone has been my go to camera for many years. I've been reading countless threads and articles and watching countless youtube videos to get a crash course on photography as well as this camera. So far, I've surprised myself with some of my pictures primarily in manual mode using different settings. I rented a Tamron 60mm macro lens to go a Sony A-mount to E-mount adapter that I have. I was shocked at some of the results. I only played with the white balance and F Stop.. I've read a lot on shutter speed. I am ready to apply what I think I've learned on my next round of pictures. All shots were taken in RAW and processed in Light Room. Lighting is Kessil 360WE except for those in my frag tank which are under GHL Mitras LX7206. Here are a few I took with the Tamron 60mm macro. Shot with a Sigma 60mm. I think this was shot with the macro. I took so many I don't remember.
