Thanks tkeracer and FullBoreReefer... I will try the LC as I had tried other methods including removing some very large LR and cleaning outside the tank to see LOTS of GHA reappear in big tuffs... Something is out of wack.. and I do not know what it is ..

When I mentioned dosing the LC, I don't mean constantly or even daily. I did it maybe once a week. I diluted the LC

Don't hold me to that equation, it was awhile ago. Then I slowly dosed it over an hours time. When it was done, I removed the filter sock and went back to my normal no sock on my drains.

what is the difference in using Lanthanum Chloride vs Lanthanum Carbonate?

Lanthanum carbonate is insoluble in water, so it can't be used for treating phosphate problems.

Lanthanum carbonate(LaCO3) is a precipitant of lanthanum and carbonate; lanthanum phosphate(LaPO4) is also a preciptant. Both are insoluble in tank water. Lanthanum chloride(LaCl) disassociates in water; the free lanthanum(La) binds with either phosphate or carbonate.

So Tom: Pls then LaCL only useful for our tank not LaCO3... not sure I followed

Only lanthanum chloride is going to be useful to any measurable extent. You might see a tiny bit of precipitation on lanthanum carbonate, as we do on calcium carbonate, but that's about it.

Lanthanum chloride is what I use . Lanthanum carbonate will not efficiently bind inorganic phosphate at reef tank pH levels if at all.

I have used LaCl for a week or so.
I saw a significant impact on brittle stars ... big ones were very unhappy, small ones died. |

I don't use it on living tanks and haven't for a very long time ; only for curing rock that is leaching PO4. Those who use it on live tanks pay a lot of attention to slow dosing and prefiltration with small micron filters around 5 micron IIRC. If the water gets a bit cloudy precipitant is in it which can clog the breathing appartuses of filter feeders and some fish.

I'm sorry that the brittle starfish had problems. Did you have a filter set up to catch the precipitate?

so i have read conflicting reports. does LaCl effect inverts?
i dose daily in extremely diluted form (2oz in 1 gal rodi water over 4 days) running it through a 3 chamber reactor with 1st stage for reaction 2nd with floss 3rd with 5 micron sediment filter then back out to near input of skimmer.

I don't know what effect, if any, lanthanum chloride would have on invertebrates other than the physical effect, such as the one the particles seem to have on fishes' gills. I'd be cautious in any case, but I am surprised that a brittle starfish would have problems, unless its breathing apparatus got plugged somehow.

I know this is an old thread.. but for the OP... did you ever try the LC?
And how did it work.. I picked up a scopas tang the other day... for no other reason than I liked the colors and I wanted a herbivore in my tank... Fwi... she is now the best member of my CUC... I had a pretty good amount of GHA in my tank... been fighting it ever since the beginning (tap water.. using rodi now ) Anyways.. in about 3 days.. she cleansed my tank spotless of ALL algea I had.. even the specks on the glass... Just wanted to offer my experiance to maybe help a little Sent from my SM-S907VL using Tapatalk |
