I rarely check the change tank because I know how much should be in there per the qty of water. I check the main tank afterwards to make sure nothing got screwed up, but so far it has been working great.

Is there a downfall to using tanks to hold and mix water? Thats how I do it, but it seems like this is taboo at least in this thread?

OK, probably a really stupid question, but aren't most refractometers supposed to take the water temperature into consideration? If so wouldn't that mean that you would just mix to whatever salinity you are wanting rather than trying to mix to a different salinity based upon the water temperature? |

I would keep your mixing station covered to minimize salinity changes. Right now I'm still making NSW in a bucket, and if I leave it uncovered while circulating and heating it for more than a day or so, there's a significant amount of evaporation. The fact that the water is heated, it's winter, and it's in my basement probably doesn't help any.

I am fixing to make a new system, but I never hard plumbed my barrels together because of the slime buildup and would take them out so I could clean them. Anybody else seeing this or you don't worry about it?

I plan to have a 2 Brute setup with a pump used to transfer water and mix the SW similar to a few of the posts. My question is how to plumb the SW pipes to get a good mixing inside the SW container. For the pipe that goes in near the top of the can, how should it be plumbed on the inside of the can? A pipe down to near the bottom? Just a 45 on the inside pointed at the side a little?

This is the begining of my continuous 90% automated water change system. Its going to service a 1000g system when everything is said and done. I say 90% because we haven't sorted out a salt delivery system beyond pouring the salt in manually.
I'm using a leg tank purchased locally, I think its 120g Its mounted on a shelf in my fish room. RO water comes in and fills the leg tank where its heated and salt is added. Salt water is then pumped into a 10g tank situated under my display (on the other side of my fish room), and then 10g is pumped out of the display into the drain, and the fresh 10g is added. Ideally we wanted something that would automatically add salt and measure for salinity to one of the 10g tanks, however I've had no luck sourcing anything that wouldn't be immediately corroded. I have however left ample access and opportunity for the system to be redesigned in the future if parts become available. Last edited by Misled; 10/30/2017 at 05:17 PM. |
