Is there any aesthetic differences between corals from different regions?
Hi guys,
I'm shopping around for my first corals and I've noticed that there are many corals of the same species from different regions of the planet. For example, is there any noticeable differences between a "regular" frogspawn versus an Indonesian frogspawn, or an Indonesian Galaxea and a neon metallic Galaxea? |

Hi LuizW13, the same coral can look different based on what part of the reef they are on, the type of flow, the amount of light they receive. Coral are a highly adaptable species, capable of weird growth forms to adapt to their surroundings.

So, names like metallic, or neon are usually just for marketing? |

Wait until you see your first Reverse Rainbow Purple Gorilla Nipple Zoanthid.
The names are mostly for marketing and are usually physically descriptive. In some cases there are broad regional differences, ie elegance corals collected from one region may have a reputation for being less hardy than those from another. Also, corals from different regions may be collected, handled, and imported with different protocols and sometimes that means something to some hobbyists. But generally the names are marketing tricks.

I don't know if it's an actual name. These are not trolling jokes though. There are a handful of famous, generally accepted named corals, but there are also a LOT of vendors out there that effectively just name every single frag they sell.
