Very thoughtful aquarium setup! It is very inspiring and provides an educational focus on non-photo corals.

I wish I could take better pics. I used to have T5 lighting over this tank and the pics always came out way better. Pics don't do spotlight LED lighting justice but in person I can tell you the detail is much better and you would keep finding even more things

It is well-deserved the title...You must have spend alot of time and dedication on the tank....BEAUTIFUL TANK!!!
Thank you Joey, and yes I have spent a lot of time on the setup and planning. Being able to enjoy it and winning TOTM makes it worth it though.

Even with all the planning, I have learned a lot and can see a lot of room for improvement. I believe the next upgrade will be even more successful, with less time commitment involved in upkeep.

Yes, I hope it does "shed some light" on non-photo corals

Thanks awsome tank
Its simply a litermeter III remote pump module that doses the solution into a BRS dual reactor. If you look at the sump picture in the article, you can see it on the right side. The important thing is to have only a drip going through it. If you have too much water flow going through, the phosphate particles won't settle in the chambers. Then, the output should be directed at the skimmer pump, which will remove anything that does make it out, and some of it will no matter what.

Thanks, we are only touching on the surface of what type of exotic colors are out there. The nice thing is, a lot of these colors are not dependent on actinic light to make them fluoresce. They pop just as much with 10K lighting. To be honest, I prefer closer to 10K lighting, which is what I used to have on this tank, but I felt that this would be closer to their natural environment. Some of the inhabitants definitely seem to prefer the darkness.

I would like to continue to improve upon the current system, concentrating mostly on Dendronephthya. I have some really crazy ideas about a Raja Ampat mangrove biotope, where Dendronephthya grow on mangrove roots. Truly beautiful and unique.

Hi Mike,

Fantastic to see you pushing the limits in reefkeeping with great success.

I had a few constructive comments I hope. You mentioned 25+ nitrates which caught me off guard. It peaked my curiosity about ramping up selective biological filtration. 25+ could mean anything really and not a benchmark to try and improve from.

Early reports suggest biopellets have ability to eliminate carbon source as the limiting nutrient growth of bacteria but many SPS growers reports suggest GFO is still recommended, or in your case lanthium chloride.

My interpretation is that a way to selectively remove ammonia biologically or mechanical is needed. Here is layman link to a ammonia stripping in home aquarium. While not useful immediately, a work around may be necessary. Your efforts of coping with nitrates would be too much for many. This would be counter to running ozone and promoting oxidation.

Marine Reef Aquarium Handbook
By Robert J. Goldstein pg 43 also on Google Books is very concise overview to ammonia stripping and challenges at home.

Also I run full blown SPS tank with slight skimming and one sided illuminated algae turf scrubber. It is 22" X 14" with one sided illumination. It easily handles 140 gallons of tank fed daily not hourly. Scraping every 3-4 days on much bigger screen my be a partial solution. Most people have strong opinion about this without ever trying it. I skim almost nothing anymore.

I also did not see mention of denitrification but saw what looked like a reactor in one of the photos.

I am now thinking that black reactor is for ozone.

I am curious about any practical application of ammonia stripping at pH 8.4 and asking questions in chemistry forum not to redirect thread.

Thanks for your input. You will have to explain to me further about ammonia stripping, and why you think it is worth it in a system that does not suffer from ammonia toxicity. Even though I don't test for it, I doubt many people do once the tank is cycled, simply because you will know based on visible signs with livestock if you have an ammonia problem. Maybe I am not understanding what ammonia stripping means.

Right now I have 2 options in mind for the high nitrates. One would be to ramp up the biopellets significantly, perhaps by running 2 reactors or getting a more commercial sized one. The second would be to ditch the biopellets and go with a nitrate reactor dosed with vodka. I know that Steve Weast uses the nitrate reactor quite successfully in his NPS coldwater tank instead of biopellets.

Those are tubastrea sp., aka "sun corals." They have many variations. It would be awesome to have a tank filled with nothing but variations of tubastrea.
