Aquarium Arts keeps corals and inverts @1.021 or less??????
I just picked up some acans and snails last night and when I tested the salinity I was a bit shocked to find such low salinity. The acans were out of the coral tank in the middle of the main floor near the invert tanks. Both systems are seperate from one another. The invert tank was at 1.021 and the coral tank was at 1.020. I very much understand the keeping the cost down idea behind this but this store can not keep SPS corals alive for nothing and I am thinking that this is why. Seeing these low salinity's, I checked the calibration of my refractometer with my 35ppt solution and it was dead on so I know it is there water that is low.
This make me wonder what all the stores keep their coral/invert tanks at? |

I am newer at this, but is this done to prevent the spread of or the progression of certain disease? Keeping lower salinity for fish accomplishes this, right?

Ya I would not have even checked it if it had not been for a recent issue of loosing a pep to too short of a transition/acclimation from 1.017 to my 1.026.

If you go into their store you will see lots of SPS that are RTN'ing, STN'ing or bleaching. The frags they sell are what was still alive of dying colonies. They have SPS in three different tanks and atleast one is not tied into the other two yet all three have dying SPS corals in them. |

And thank you too Skip. I like and frequent both of your stores and AA as I think all of you are great stores with your own niches. I have just been wondering for the past year or so , since Kingsley started stocking SPS again, why they are always dieing in their displays. What really gets me though, is that they do nothing about it but just frag off the good parts and sell them insted. If it is as simple as raising the salinity a few points to say 1.023 like you guys do at Pet's inc then wouldn't that actually balance the costs out over time? |

RC does. Just ask for the reef water. It might be 1.026...

That's sounds right...but I confused myself by thinking I was just confusing $1.25 with 1.025.

Wal-Mart probably. I think they are $10 at pretty much any of the fish stores that carry them. I'm pretty sure that at AA if you get one you get the 5 gallons of water for free that time.

I think I got 2-3 used that I can give to you. A frag in trade wouldn't be turned down but not obligated to
I can bring them to PROP if you're going. Let me know if you're interested.

evsalty - I posted this same issue with AA about 4 years ago.
I too purchased some peppermints and they died shortly after acclimation. Went back to AA, got 2 more pepps and then tested their water when I got home. It was like 1.020 or maybe less IIRC. Did a much LONGER acclimation and they lived for about a year this time!

I don't know what's going on with AA. They seem to get a grasp on bringing customers back in by getting some descent coral but then they do something like this. Or all of there coral are browned out. I really like that store and somebody is always asking if I need help, but there coral selection is sliding again.

Yeah, they are getting better and absolutely love that place but it seems as though they are lacking compared to other nearby stores. We won't name any names. I wish they would step up their game a bit, because there are plenty of loyalists out there still, we just need a reason to visit.

AA actually has quite a few SPS now. Not as nice as RC's but I would consider them good for someone just wanting to try SPS for the first time.
