Dave.M, I'm not 100% sure on the naming of the Jacquilinae. I have had it for about 6 weeks. I love deep water corals. When I got it the coral was barely flourescing at all just a dark green color.

This is sitting all the way at the bottom of the tank. And it's just lying on the bottom with a little tilt against a rock.

Snails keep pushing it around, and over, but it is starting to pick up some color. The piece is about 7" long and 4" wide.

The only way to accurately identify a scleractinian coral is to either test a DNA sample or have a certified expert examine the calicle. 99% of the names hobbyists apply to their corals are completely wrong so calling it Acropora jacquilineae is just as good as anything else by me.

Hey Dave. How are things? New set up is looking fantastic!

I'm missing the So Cal swap meets. If you have any big ones next summer let me know, I'll make the trip down.

Hi Eric

I am coordinating with the local reef club (SFVR) to put together another old school back yard swap at the end of the summer. We did one last fall and had a good turn out.

Watch the SoCal forum here on RC, they should be figuring out their calendar shortly and posting the date.

Dave - Glad to see your still at it. I have not been on RC for quite some time. I moved to Charlotte, NC from Las Vegas a few years back and have a pair of 240 gallon tanks as bookends on either side of our living room fireplace.

I just finished ripping out about five gallons of Birdnest (various varieties) from one of the tanks. That stuff just grew like weeds and before I knew it, 1/3 of the tank was Birdnest. Looked really cool until the lower stuff started dying due to lack of light/flow. There is still a bunch in the tank, but I now have room for a few more SPS.

Looks like your tank is going great. Is it the same tank in the same place from 8 years ago when I visited? Do you still have all the backyard setups going?

Mike

Hey Mike,

Great to hear from you. It's the same tank from 8 years ago. I had stripped down all the back yard frag tanks for awhile and just had one tomato bin as a rock sump/refugium outside.

Then last spring I got the bug again and setup a 140g glass frag tank out in the yard (6'x3.5'x1') It's a mix of stuff. It was doing amazing till the crash last fall. Since the crash all the efforts (read that as money) has gone into restocking the tank with corals and fish. I am just now starting to put extra pieces outside. And as always there are some killer colors of stuff growing out in the sun.

I also have 2 10' fiberglass troughs that I am itching to setup for additional sun growing experimentation. But I always have some excuse for not finding the time to create another project for me for around the house.

I did put another tank online though. This little baby went up Memorial Weekend. (28x28x32)

As a kid I loved having my freshwater tanks and always loved livebearers. I hadn't had a fresh water tank since I graduated highschool in 86 (other than for Turtles). For years I wanted to do a livebearer tank, and seeing some of the beautiful planted tanks I took a stab at it. I thought it was going to be cheap and easy compared to the reef.... LOL NOT!!!

So now I have a tank with a bunch of livebearers, and every few days there are a few more different colored babies cruising the bottom. The planted tank is pretty quick rewards, every Sunday night I have to trim the plant growth from the week. Some of these plants are growing over 15" a week !!!

Fortunately the Fiancee' is super supportive of both tanks, and she is talking about setting up another small salt tank. So who know's what project will be next.

Dave: It was great to meet you. Your tanks (including the freshwater) are inspiring! To get back to where you are now so soon after your crash is a testament to your wet thumb. Oh, and who says LEDs don't work well for SPS??? Lol!

Macro shots came out stunning! I'd love to hear more about your "backyard setups", if you'd rather PM me or point me to a link!

Btw, Great yellow tang school!

Gris,

Funny you asked about the outside tanks. I just picked up a bunch of corals this week to try to work with. And I took some shots yesterday.

While the outside frag tank was originally intended for frags, I have a field of xenia that has flourished out in the sun. So all the brown bushes that you see in the tank is pulsing xenia.

Corals on the left side have been outside for awhile. Most of the corals on the right eggcrate have only been outside a couple of days.

The purple one in the center is super bright. This is under straight sun, no blue light added.

Everything bushy along the top of the pic is Xenia

The corals in the bottom left of the photo came out of a friend's tank that sold his house with a built in 225. These corals have been outside a couple of weeks. The corals are showing some nice green and the other is a pink prostrata.

This is my rock sump. It's filled with several hundred pounds of rock and the fluidized sand filter. This is where the baby Bangai have been growing out. The tank has a couple of different clowns, a yellow tang, a copper band and an abundance of Aptasia. I keep saying I am going to pull out all the rock and sun bleach it, but I always find some excuse to just let it keep growing. This has my cheato colony in it on the left side. THe chaeto clump is about 2' deep and almost 4' across and 1' wide. I am able to pull a 5g bucket of chaeto out every few weeks.

So thats the status of the outside tanks. I hope to have some photos of some nicely colored corals in the next few weeks.

On a seperate note, I recently was granted access to some cool equipment for testing water quality. The phosphates of the system came back at .14. I had it double checked and the test was accurate. I have the inexpensive Hanna Colorimeter and it measured .13. $60 vs $400k - Not bad reading.

I put some GFO online in an old Deltec Fluidized reactor and in a week had dropped the Phosphate down to .03.

But all the pictures taken in the past month, and all the coral colors were in a high nutrient tank.

I am interested to see what things look like in a month or so if I can keep the nutrients down.

Dave B
