Pump Question

Hello All,

I am helping a friend out with his 90 gallon aquarium. The aquarium has an single external overflow box with a 1" drain. His current pump looks like an unbranded Aquamedic Ocean Runner 3500 (max 900GPH). If I remember correctly, the pump delivers about 680GPH at 6ft. His pump recently died.

So now I am looking at a new pump for him. His two top choices are the Ehiem 1260 or 1262. the 1260 at 6 ft delivers about 400GPH. The 1262 at 6 ft delivers about 700GPH. I am concern with replacing the pump with the 1262 or a OR3500 because I think he's probably close to the maximum of his overflow box. Even the slightest blockage can result in a overflow tank. But obviously, it works because he has had this setup for years. If you were to purchase a replacement pump, would you go with a Ehiem 1260 or 1262?

Thanks
Minh

Probably the bigger one and gate it back a bit.

Hey Minh

Consider the Laguna (AKA Askol) PowerJet 900 or 1200. They are more power effecient than the Eheim pumps. They can be mounted internally or externally to the sump. They are very quiet. They are a little cheaper than an Eheim. Peggy sells them at both her O Street store and her AquaWorks store. The AquaWorks store has a better selection.

I have been very happy with my waterblaster pump. Very quiet but the laguna pumps are a little easier on the pocket book.

You could oversize the pump, but you will have to throttle it back. Personally, I don't like HAVING to do something to prevent a problem. If not throttled back, the tank will over flow. Not an ideal situation for me. I'd go with the 1260, or another pump with <600gph flow rate.
