Bio Balls - Use them or lose them?
I have heard that using bio balls can cause your nitrate levels to jump as they get dirty. I know they are great for oxygenating the water, but what do you guys think is a better approach for a fish only system: with or without bio balls? I took my bio balls out and have placed a lot of live rock in my wet/dry. Ideally I'd like to use both but I'm not sure if the pros outweigh the cons of using bio balls.
Any thoughts? Use the bio balls or skip them? Thank you! |

I'd switch back to the BioBalls for a Fish Only setup. Just be sure and keep the prefilters and filter pads clean, at least once every week or two depending on your setup.
Nitarte in a Fish Only system is not anywhere close to the issue it is in a Reef Tank. |

If I had a lot of live rock and a skimmer, I wouldn't use the bioballs.
