Wow, those are awesome fish! They sure look like pipefish. I'm not familiar with Cornetfish.

Well, they are in the Syngnathiformes (pipefishes and seahorses) order:

http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spec...ry.php?id=3275

Cool! I didn't know that pipefish had such large cousins. Over four feet long! Good grief, what size tank are they in??

Right now they are in a 2000-gallon holding tank, but in the summer we put them in an outdoor 80,000-gallon tank with lots of reef fish, sharks, and stingrays, that people go snorkeling in. The cornetfish are the stars of the tank. I also have some smaller ones in an 800-gallon tank that I caught this past summer. They can get to be 7ft long! If you look closely, the one in the foreground has a sergeant major in his mouth that he just ate.

A 2000-gallon tank? An 80,000 gallon tank? Wow, I can't even imagine how big that is! Is this at a zoo, or an Aquarium? Is this part of your job? How cool is that!

From the pic, it doesn't look like their jaws are fused, as in pipefishs. It looks like they can open up pretty wide. ??

April,

Yes, the aquarium is called Atlantis Marine World. It's a really fun place to work. Their jaws are fused but they can expand to a pretty good diameter. I'll try to get a shot of one yawning to give you an idea. It may take a few days.

Yes, I would say you have an EXTREMELY cool job. Can we switch jobs?

They are H. Erectus. I took this shot when I had their hitching posts out to clean, so they can all be seen.

April, I will let you know when the babies are ready for new homes. I have 2 multibanded pipes. Not sure of the sexes, but they do fight on occasion so they may be the same. They are awesome though, and eat frozen mysis to.

Seamonkey2 -

Great pictures - I like the one of the pipe with the seahorse hitched on it. How does the hawk fish do in with the pipes and sh's? I thought they were fairly aggressive.

oopppsss that pic is from the old tank, the bilevel tank is for the SH and pipes only, the big tank 240 is where the hawks resides now, and when they were living togheter, the hawk did not pick on the horses, but bother the pipes, hawks don't like elongated bodies.

yeah my wife did not belive me when I told her, that horses like to ride on the pipes, and when she saw it, she was....very amused

Kayla;

Those are outstanding photographs. I checked out your profile to see if you are a professional photographer - I see you're a student. I hope you're pursuing a photography career, you have a definite talent there.

What kind of camera do you use?

You're interests are very similar to mine seahorses and my aussies!

Carolyn

Wow, thanks! Well, as much as I love photography, I plan to pursue my first love as a career: the ocean. However, that doesn't mean I can't keep up photography as a side hobby/job, as the two can certainly relate!

I use a Canon Powershot A95 (just a 5 mp, point-and-shoot digi). It took me awhile to "learn" what features/settings work for each desired effect, but I think I've finally mastered this camera.

And I must agree; you have very nice interests.

Nice tank Flipturn88! Your horses look very happy in there! Yes, I agree I think you have mastered your camera. I took care of some alligator pipes for awhile at my work and we ended up with a pair. We tried to raise the babies but they only lasted a couple of months I think it was. Where did you get your gators from?
