D2 - your tanks have been pretty awesome. I don't want to sound off but I have a question for you. I'm from a different forum but figured I could ask you. I am having a 4ft x 4ft x 18inch cube built by greatlakesaquariums for the house I am having built. I was curious who your stand builder was for your cube? Anyway thanks in advance if you consider sharing

I felt privelaged to see your 130g in person last year, and I followed the build from that point on. I will definitely be following this.
Where'd you guys move to? Still in Houston? |

Following! Your last build was one of my favorites. You are looking for a sump? I have to admit a custom made Trigger Systems would be pretty cool.

Looking forward to following along on this one Dennis. I am "borrowing" several of your ideas from your cube for my upcoming build after my move in June. Can't wait to see what you come up with this time.

This is awesome! I might be planning something pretty similar, just can't decide for sure where I want the tank. Either way my sump will be in my garage, and humidity was one of my first concerns. Here in PA I'm not sure how warm my garage will get in the summer, my garage is also part of my home and not detached in any way.
I've been leaning toward the use of Rubbermaid stock tanks myself for the exact reasons you described, you can get a high water volume sump on the cheap. If vented with a fan on a controller would you really need to frame up your tank room? PS: I want to come snorkel/dive to pick rock! I'd eat the airfare on that for sure! Hell I'd even buy you a few drinks! |

On the other hand, it would be a cheap way to heat your tank! Lol... Which brings me to my next point, the winter months. You'll want one helluva heater!

Fulshear, but still working in Houston.
Hmmm... good question. It's been a solid month so far so another few weeks? Quote:
I'm looking into the EcoPlus Commercial Grade chillers. The 1/2 hp can take a 220g tank down 30 degrees.

Tank is almost here! Might ship out this week from DSA. Fingers crossed.
Meanwhile, progress has been uber slow, but I got a few things done. For one, I got the garage floor professionally coated/chipped. Then I got a sink for the garage (had it plumbed during the house build) and hooked that up along with my RO/DI unit. Now I'm investigating shelving options and leaning towards some commercial steel boltless shelving. It's powdercoated so it will be rust resistive and the shelves are rated at around 1200lb capacity per shelf. These will go in that angled area to the left of the red tool chest and will hold a bunch of equipment. But I may mix it up and also build some 2x4 shelving to hold some of the bigger items, especially if I go with a large rubbermaid sump.

Man oh man, that garage looks GOOD!
Did you decide to not wall off the fish area from the rest of the garage?

Thanks, Richard!

Ya, walling off the garage is last thing I want to do. Temps have been in the high 80's and so far the garage has remained pretty comfy. The door is insulated and seals up tight, and two of the 4 walls are insulated. The garage also faces northeast. I'm currently looking at the EcoPlus line of commercial chillers. I think something like the 1/2 hp will cover my needs. And I am also thinking of installing an exhaust fan in the ceiling to help pull out the humidity and keep my tools from rusting.

haha, ya well bikes and stuff were still outside. I hadn't gotten everything back into the garage. And now that angled corner left of the red tool chest is piled with reef stuff. But I do love my new floor!
