My take is this. Measure everything and be consistent. Even if the measurement is wrong, if you're consistently wrong you'll at least have a baseline of wrongness and IF SOMETHING CHANGES in your system (without you doing anything) your next measurement will show a change. You can at least spot a deviation in the norm.
