I totally agree....TBS rock is known to be filled with an abundance of rich life...both good and bad

I would suggest staying the course and maintain patience in your attempts to capture these "pests"....

wishing you continued success.....things are looking just spectacular so far!!!!

Beautiful tank. I was in love with this thread (and your tank) from the start, but when you said you were getting TBS rock, I subscribed. Nice.

Hows that skimmer working out for you? Thinking about taking the plunge and getting a I-tech 200

Loving it so far. It pulled out a good amount of brown water the first day or two i had the rock in, but now with no bio-load it's just sitting pretty with the bubbles not quite making it into the collection cup. It will be a while before I can really report on performance but from the look of it, I don't have any concerns.

D2,

Sorry to hear the high salinity dip did not work. It worked like a charm for me, how long did you leave the rock in the bucket? It takes a little while sometimes before they pop out. Are you positive they where in the rock you were dipping?

Another thing you could try is taking the rock they are in and putting it in a seperate smaller tank or container and then just let them get comforatable and then throw some shrimp or whatever on the other side of the container when they go to eat it yank the rock out. You have to be patient because they are smart little basatards...

Good Luck!
Scott

I got TBS rock 3 years ago.I added a few pieces to some Fiji rock when I started the tank.(AP24)It was full of life for sure.Just on the drive home I had 4-5 pistols in the wrapping paper.I did get some cool hitchhiker corals and a lot of brittle stars.Over the period of a few months I was able to catch 2 mantis shrimp & 4 pistols.I still have a pistol in the tank,it's been 3 years and I've seen him 1 time.I hear him all the time, somedays more than others.I just gave up on him.Keep in mind all those critters came in about 10lbs of rock.Good luck!In the months to come more and more life will show up.Oh yeah the tank is nice too!!!!

Very nice! I like the emphasis on design. Quality always trumps quantity IMO. After seeing the pics from different vantage points, I couldn't stop wondering what the tank looks like from outside at night with the shades pulled. Better watch out for "peeping reefers"

Thanks guys!
No new pics yet. Nothing has changes since the pics i posted a day or two ago.
Oh, but I did catch another Mantis. That's two down. And I snagged a gorilla crab.
I ended up pulling the offending rock out of the tank. It's the size of a basketball. Brought it into my garage and left it hoping the Mantis would realize he was out of water and would jump out. 20 minutes later, no luck. So I started looking real close and finally saw a couple beady eyes staring back at me. I went into the kitchen and got a glass of scolding hot water from the faucet and my trusty turkey baster. Started squirting the hot water into the hole he was in on top of the rock. A couple squirts later and he came flying out the bottom. I then started flooding every hole i could find but no more Mantis jumping ship. I heard lots of snap/crackle/pop noises but i think it was just the water filling all the nooks and crannies inside the rock. Tonite I'll try the other big rock that I'm pretty sure has at least one mantis in it.

Are the mantis dead? If not what are you going to do with them?

I posted on Marsh that I'm giving them away.
I don't want to kill them.
First come first serve!
And if you want to bring a small frag like a zoa or something I wouldn't turn it down.

those gorilla crabs are nasty little dudes. i had one in my 25g and it took out most of my CUC. i had to do the same similar thing to the rock as you to get him out.

i wonder who would win between the mantis and gorilla crab? hmm...

If you look in my sump, both my fuge and return sections are crystal clear. Can't even tell there is water movement. I just turned it on this past weekend though, so it's not like i can give you a long term report.

Those are freaking cool looking. Wonder how bad it would be to put them in my 12g?

Umm, no. Lol. My rock isn't removable and they would probably destroy my tank.
Go let them out in the bay.
