Be very very quiet, I am hunting Aiptasias
Just curious what you guys use as a solution to keep them under control. It's Hard for me since I have a couple of eels so some shrimps like peppermints become a tasty meal. Also, the butterfly fish that do eat them are a hit or miss with them eating your corals.

This may seem crazy, but unless they get too close to other colonies I just leave them be.
If they do, then I hit them with kalk. |

make a strong slurry with KALK and use a syringe to inject it right on the oral disk of the aptasia . but beware to not get any on your corals or dose to much of the kalk. if you have a tremendous amount of them then do the tank in sections until they are eradicated. also aggressive skimming and nutrient control (sometimes feeding) will help control them.

Got tired of the kalk. Eventually added two berghia (which multiplied and paid for themselves with offspring) that eradicated my aiptasia.

Kleini Butterfly.
Just devastated a rather nasty Aiptasia/Majano problem here. I mean wiped 'em out completely. Hasn't touched a coral, although I'm feeding heavier now seeing how much of a picker it is. |

Vinegar by injection, some suggest lemon juice.
I have used Kalk injections but eventually the needle just clogged even with fresh water clearing after use. |

I prefer to add as few potentially toxic chemicals to my tank as possible. I use a syringe filled with (near) boiling water. You can literally cook them where they sit. It may not be as quick as some other methods, but has been 100% effective for me.
I have been thinking about a laser.......

I wish I had read this post earlier. I had a huge piece of live rock in my sump that was infected with aptasia. The person at the store said to remove the rock, scrape off the aptasia with a knife, rinse with fresh water, and return. I did that, but the problem is that once out of the water it is difficult to find them, so I missed some. I did it again. Still missed some. Earlier this evening I decided to risk losing all the good stuff living in/on the rock by giving it a good scrubbing with a cleaning brush I use only for aquarium stuff. I also broke it up into several smaller pieces. So far as I know, it is now free of aptasia, but it's probably also free of beneficial bacteria, etc. Breaking it up left more surface area to grow good things, but I hope my cycle doesn't suffer as a result. If I had known it was as easy as boiling water injections I could have saved myself a lot of work! Last edited by Amethyst; 08/20/2014 at 02:08 AM. |
