your column on sumps

I just read your column on setting up a sump. I have been thinking about rethinking my sump (just posted a question in the filtration section) but it never occurred to me to just get rid of the filter sock as you suggest. If I were to do that, what would take up the slack in terms of mechanical filtration? The protein skimmer?

I have been thinking of creating more space in the sump for a refugium by getting rid of the skimmer and using an HOB skimmer. Are you suggesting that I could get away with that in my 55 gallon tank, about seventy pounds of live rock? If so, great. I could then use that area for my refugium.
