QT setup question - how fast to lower the SG
I recently upgraded my system from a 90 gallon to a 120, since my powder blue tang had ich about a year ago, I decided to remove all the fish from my dispay and QT all my fish and leave the display fish free for 8 weeks.
I have a 55 Gallon tank setup in my fish room, It currently has all my fish in it. (2 Small clowns, a 3 inch powder blue tang, a bar goby). It is fully cylced has a megaflow sump, and ASM G3 simmer on it. I have bioballs in my sump and filter floss to hold the bacteria. I also have live rock, but will remove it before i start hypo. My question is, what would be the proper length of time to lower the SG for hypo treatment to ensure no ich is present. I dont want a cycle to start.. Should I lower it slowly over the course of 1 week, 2 weeks? Another question i have is about my serpent star. Should he be qt'ed or will he die? Should I just put him back in the display? |

48 hours.
Inverts will not survive hyposalinity.

I would not be terribly concerned with bacteria, have no idea if they would survive a slower drop any better than one that takes 48 hours, but I suppose since your fish aren't currently showing any signs of infection it wouldn't hurt to take a bit of extra time. Every situation is different, but IME 48 hours is a safe amount of time in which to get to hypo levels. When I've QTed, water changes have been my weapon of choice in the absence of bacteria. Again, each situation is different, since yours holds little urgency perhaps there would be a benefit from bringing it down more slowly.

bacteria and all inverts are dead if you hypo.............
when i got my coral beauty i went from 1.023 to 1.010 in 1 hour.......... Fish survived and is doing great in my DT......... ideal is 48hours but it doesnt matter to much.......the important part is bring the fish back up from 1.009 to 1.025 this should be done over a 3 weeks time.............IME

Hypo may kill SOME bacteria, hypo does not kill off your nitrifying bacteria.
I agree, 2 days is probably a good safe min time line for dropping the SG. I have usually done it in 3-4 days and never had a problem. ** It is more important to bring the SG back up slowly when the treatment is done. IIRC rasing the SG back up should be done over at least a full week.
